Padres Video
Friday’s slate saw Padres affiliates split six games, with standout offensive showings in El Paso’s Game One comeback and San Antonio’s Game One win. Luis Campusano continued to rake for El Paso, and Enmanuel Pinales dazzled with 5 1/3 scoreless innings for San Antonio. Fort Wayne was no-hit aside from a single, and Lake Elsinore cashed in on errors for a gritty win. Bullpen strength and timely hitting were key in several victories.
Late-Inning Rally Lifts Chihuahuas in Wild Comeback Win
Box Score
A furious fifth and sixth inning surge powered the El Paso Chihuahuas past Sugar Land, 10–7, in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader at Southwest University Park.
Trailing 4–0 entering the bottom of the fifth, El Paso sent 10 batters to the plate. Yonathan Perlaza’s RBI single opened the scoring before Nate Mondou cleared the bases with a three-run double, tying the game. Tim Locastro followed with a go-ahead RBI single, and Forrest Wall capped the inning with a run-scoring knock of his own to make it 6–4.
After Sugar Land reclaimed a 7–6 lead on Brice Matthews’ three-run homer in the sixth, the Chihuahuas answered again. Mike Brosseau walked and scored on Clay Dungan’s two-run double, putting El Paso back in front. Locastro plated two more with a single to center, finishing a 3-for-4 effort that included three RBIs and a run scored.
Dungan reached base three times and drove in two runs, while Mondou walked twice, doubled, and tallied three RBIs. Perlaza reached base three times as well, scoring once and driving in another.
Jose Espada earned the win despite allowing the Matthews homer, and Eduarniel Núñez worked a scoreless seventh for the save. Wall threw out a runner at third and was picked off in the fifth.
Campusano Stays Hot, But El Paso Drops Nightcap
Box Score
Despite Luis Campusano’s three-RBI night and a multi-hit effort from Mason McCoy, the El Paso Chihuahuas fell 11–5 in Game Two of Friday’s doubleheader against Sugar Land.
After surrendering four runs in the first, all charged to Kevin Kopps, El Paso came back with two in the bottom of the frame. Campusano walked and scored in the first, then added an RBI single in the fifth before launching a two-run homer to center in the seventh. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, continuing to produce in his stint at Triple-A.
McCoy reached base twice and doubled in the fifth, while Emil Turbi, inserted midgame, added a pinch-hit double in his second plate appearance. Nate Mondou and Tim Locastro also singled in the losing effort.
The pitching faltered throughout for El Paso. Kopps, Austin Krob, and Jason Blanchard combined to allow nine runs over the first five innings. Raul Brito gave up Edwin Díaz’s two-run shot in the sixth that extended the Sugar Land lead to 11–3.
Defensively, the Chihuahuas committed three errors and had a passed ball.
Pinales Dominates, Reyes Sparks Offense in Series Opener
Box Score
The San Antonio Missions opened their doubleheader with a crisp 6–2 win over Midland, led by Enmanuel Pinales’ 5 1/3 shutout innings and a 15-hit attack paced by Ripken Reyes and Kai Murphy.
Pinales entered in the second following a rain delay and stifled Midland’s offense, allowing just two hits while striking out five. He retired 16 of the final 17 batters he faced and picked up his fourth win of the season.
The Missions scored in five separate innings. Kai Murphy went 3-for-4 while Brandon Valenzuela added three times on base and a steal. Marcos Castañon chipped in an RBI double in the third.
Francisco Acuna had a two-hit game, also driving in a run and scoring another. Tyson Neighbors struck out two over two innings to close out the win.
Missions’ Early Lead Slips Away in Extra-Inning Loss
Box Score
The San Antonio Missions couldn’t hold a 3–0 lead and fell 5–4 in eight innings to the RockHounds in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader.
San Antonio broke out with a three-run third, aided by a hit-by-pitch and three walks. Addison Kopack doubled in the fifth, while Moisés Gómez reached base three times, and Francisco Acuna reached base twice. Brandon Valenzuela drove in one. Acuna’s RBI single in the fifth tied the game at 4–4 after the Missions fell behind in the bottom of the third.
Jagger Haynes struggled following Victor Lizarraga, allowing four runs in 1 2/3 innings, including a three-run homer to Colby Halter in the third. Jake Higginbotham and Stephen Jones each worked a scoreless inning, but Ethan Routzahn surrendered the walk-off single to Caeden Trenkle in the bottom of the eighth.
San Antonio managed only three hits, but drew five walks and had just five left on base. The Missions went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
TinCaps Silenced in One-Hit Shutout
Box Score
The Fort Wayne TinCaps were overmatched from the start Friday night, falling 8–0 to Great Lakes in a game where they managed just one hit and struck out 14 times.
Starter Isaiah Lowe struggled, allowing five runs in the opening inning on four hits and two walks. He ultimately allowed six earned runs over 4 1/3 innings. Bodi Rascon and Luis Germán followed in relief, but Great Lakes continued to pile on, tacking on two more runs in the later innings.
Offensively, the TinCaps never found a rhythm. Sean Barnett’s third-inning single was the team’s only hit of the night. Kai Roberts, Leo De Vries, and Ryan Jackson each struck out twice, and the team did not have an at-bat with a runner in scoring position. Brendan Durfee drew one of Fort Wayne’s two walks.
The TinCaps defense was tested early and often. Jack Costello committed an error in the seventh.
Storm Erupt, Take Advantage of Errors in Win Over Modesto
Box Score
A five-run sixth inning, fueled by errors and timely hits, lifted the Lake Elsinore Storm to a 5–3 win over Modesto on Friday night at The Diamond.
Trailing 3–0, the Storm were quiet offensively until the sixth. After a leadoff walk and a fielding error allowed Kavares Tears to reach and eventually score on a wild pitch, Kaden Hollow broke things open with a two-out, bases-clearing double to center. Hollow advanced to third on a misplay by Felnin Celesten and scored on another wild pitch to cap the rally.
Despite collecting only two hits, Lake Elsinore capitalized on five walks, two Modesto errors, and multiple wild pitches. Lamar King Jr. doubled and walked, reaching base twice and scoring a key run. Victor Figueroa and Zach Evans also reached and scored during the comeback.
On the mound, the Storm bullpen was superb. Carson Swilling faced five batters and struck out four of them, bridging to Kleiber Olmedo, who allowed just one hit over the final four innings to earn his first win. Jesse Wainscott took the loss.
The Storm improved to 32–41.
