That was good news for the Padres. King turned in the best start of the season by any Friars starter, going seven shutout innings, and Manny Machado homered for the second straight game as the Padres opened a big homestand with a 1-0 victory over Atlanta. The reason why this was the best start for the Padres is that it came at a time when the Padres needed a big win and needed a starter to go deep in a game. Coming off a 4⅓-inning outing against the St. Louis Cardinals and five straight subpar outings, King went seven shutout innings for the second time this season (May 18 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers), allowing six hits and no walks with five strikeouts. The Padres' offense didn't do much, but also didn't need to. Machado had two of the Friars' four hits and also walked. He took right-handed starter Grant Holmes deep leading off the fourth inning, boosting his team-leading homer total to 14 and RBI total to 42. King never had more than one runner on an any inning and handed things over to left-hander Adrian Morejon, who retired all three hitters he faced before yielding to right-handed closer Mason Miller. Miller did run into a little trouble in the ninth, but it came with two outs. Austin Riley singled and pinch-runner Eli White stole second. Miller then walked Dom Smith on a 3-2 pitch before striking out Mike Yastrzemski for his 21st save in as many chances. Game 2: In a game that started with a bit of deja vu from the Texas Rangers series opener, it came to a conclusion with a reminder from Machado: He is still dangerous. Machado lined the first pitch of the bottom of the 10th inning to center field to score Jackson Merrill from second base for a 7-6 victory over Atlanta to clinch a series victory. Machado had the biggest hit in the game for the third time in four games as he also had a two-run homer in a three-run top of the 10th inning Saturday vs. the Rangers in 6-4 win. But as Machado said after this game, this one was "madcap." After a scoreless inning by left-hander Wandy Peralta as an opener, right-hander Griffin Canning couldn't even finish the second inning, coughing up four runs on four hits and a walk. He began the second with two singles and a hit batter, then a strikeout and a two-run single by Rowdy Tellez and a second strikeout. But a Michael Harris II double and another walk spelled doom and the end of his day. But the Padres turned the tables on what happened Friday and scored five runs in the bottom of the first with the bottom of the order getting things going, then Samad Taylor putting the Padres ahead with a two-run single for a 5-4 lead. Despite each allowing a run, left-handers Kyle Hart and Yuki Matsui followed Canning and settled things down over the next 4⅓ innings to give the Friars a chance despite giving up the lead. This had the feel of those April wins as Tatis hit his second Petco Park homer and third of the season in the seventh, a solo drive to center. Miller, who threw 20 pitches Monday, came back and needed only 11 pitches to strike out two of the three hitters in the ninth, so he came back for the 10th, getting another strikeout as he finished that inning in 11 pitches again. Atlanta right-handed closer Raisel Iglesias tried to pull a Miller, but only got one pitch into the 10th when Machado walked it off, with the throw home too late to get Merrill. Game 3: This was the most surprising series of the season. A sweep of the team that had the best winning percentage in MLB? Yeah, it happened. Now, what do the Padres do with this momentum? Buoyed by a surprise start by left-hander JP Sears, the Padres dumped Atlanta 5-2 win sweep the three-game set. Ty France homered and drove in two runs, while Taylor had a pair of RBIs as the Friars bounced back from losing two of three on the road to the Rangers. Sears was relegated to Triple-A in spring training and posted a 7.99 ERA in the offensive elements of the Pacific Coast League. But Sears put that behind him and, needing some length as he made his season debut with the Padres, and he responded with 5⅔ innings, just the third time in 15 starts this season he had gotten an out in the sixth inning. He allowed two runs on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. As it was, Sears turned in the fourth start in the Padres' last 35 games in which a pitcher went that long and allowed three runs or less. It would seem to have earned him another start after right-hander Lucas Giolito (right elbow inflammation) went on the 15-day injured list. Facing a crafty veteran in left-hander Martin Perez, the Padres' offense came through. France staked the Friars to a 2-0 lead with a solo homer in the third, his ninth of the season, and a sac fly in the fourth. The Padres manufactured another run in the fifth as Tatis walked, Taylor had a bunt single and, following a double steal, Xander Bogaerts singled home Tatis. It could have been more, but Merrill and Miguel Andujar couldn't come through. Atlanta trimmed it to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on a Joey Bart homer, but the Padres got both right back in the bottom of the sixth. France doubled and was bunted to third by Freddy Fermin. Jase Bowen walked and, after a pitching change, stole second. Taylor came through again, singling with two outs to plate France and Bowen. The bullpen did bullpen things after Sears exited, with right-hander David Morgan going 1⅓ perfect innings, Peralta one hit in one inning and right-hander Jason Adam closed things out with Miller unavailable, pitching a perfect ninth for his second save of the season. Now, the Los Angeles Dodgers come to town. Dodgers series Game 1: Walker Buehler just does Walker Buehler things when the Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers get together. But for the first time, Buehler did it while wearing a Friars jersey. The right-handed starter was really good for 5⅓ innings and France hit an early three-run homer that helped carry the Padres to a 7-1 victory over their rival. It was the fourth straight victory for the Friars, all coming against teams that entered the series with the best winning percentage in MLB. Buehler helped set the tone by allowing just three hits and a run, while walking three and striking out five. In 10 starts since the beginning of May, Buehler has been very solid, going five innings in all but one. In six of those, he got at least a single out in the fifth, which significantly increases a team's chances of winning that game. Buehler was lifted in the sixth after a walk to Andy Pages and with Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts coming up. Matsui came in and gave up a double to Freeman, with Pages only able to advance to third. After walking Betts intentionally, Matsui got Max Muncy to pop out and Kyle Tucker to fly out to end the threat unscathed. The Padres' offense continued its recent good work. Machado and Sheets drew leadoff walks in the second inning off right-handed starter Roki Sasaki. After Bogaerts flew out to center, Sheets drilled his opposite-field three-run blast deep into the left-field stands to erase an early 1-0 deficit. While the Padres weren't able to further take advantage of Sasaki's wildness (five walks), that did lead to an early exit and got the Friars into the bullpen. It took until the eighth inning for that work to pay off. Sheets had a one-out single, Bogaerts and France walked to load the bases and Sung-Mun Song broke it open with a two-run single. Rodolfo Duran doubled home another and Tatis capped the four-run rally with an RBI single. Meanwhile, the bullpen kept the Dodgers at bay, with Adam, Morejon and Peralta tossing scoreless innings. And it made Buehler 7-1 in the Padres-Dodgers series. Game 2: All you really need to know about this one is that Duran, the 11-year minor-league catcher who made his MLB debut last month, pitched the top of the ninth inning. The Padres gave up their biggest inning of the season and the most runs in a game as the Dodgers steamrolled their way to a 15-3 victory on the strength of a nine-run sixth inning. Right-hander Randy Vasquez took the brunt of the damage. He followed Hart, who served as an opener with two innings and one run, and gave up seven runs (five) earned while only getting one out in the sixth. It didn't help that second baseman Will Wagner booted a ball that trickled into right field. Instead of being the second out of the inning, Freeman scooted home from second with the go-ahead run to make it 2-1. Two batters later, it was 5-1 on Tommy Edman's RBI triple and Tucker's two-run homer. Dalton Rushing and Mookie Betts also homered in the frame as the Dodgers sent 12 batters to the plate. Vasquez has allowed seven runs in back-to-back outings and at least four runs in three of his last four. Sheets was about the lone offensive highlight, with three hits, including a solo homer, his 13th long ball of the season. The game marked the halfway point of the season, with the Padres at 43-38, just one game off last year's mark at this time. Game 3: In what was a winnable swing game, even entering the series, the Padres just didn't capitalize on the few opportunities to score that they did have. As a result, the Dodgers came away with a 4-2 victory, taking two out of three games. After looking very good in his start vs. Atlanta to begin the week, King ran into trouble in the fifth inning and his day turned sour. The Dodgers got three runs against King, who allowed four of the first five hitters to reach on a hit batter and three walks to put L.A. up 2-1, then Betts had a two-run single. While it was a catastrophe like the nine-run outburst the day before, it was just as damaging against a team such as the Dodgers, whose bullpen rivals that of the Padres. Machado continued his excellent run by hitting his team-best 15th homer of the season, a solo shot to left field that tied the game in the fourth inning. After the Dodgers' rally in the fifth, Merrill led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, stole second with one out and scored on Bogaerts' ground single to right to make it 4-2. In the eight, Machado had a leadoff double and France was hit by a pitch, but Bogaerts struck out and Andujar hit into an inning-ending double play. Fermin drew a one-out walk in the ninth, but like the eighth, a double play ended the threat, this time on a Tatis grounder to short. While the homestand ended with a bit of a thud, the Padres continue their stretch of 17 games in 17 days with a seven-game road trip, with the first three at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs in a rematch of the NL Wild Card Series from last year, before the Padres and Dodgers meet again in L.A. for four games. Marvelous Mason Miller Some of the amazing stats for the Padres' closer: Season stats: 2-1, 0.79 ERA, 32 games, 21 saves (21 chances), 34 IP, 14 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 13 BB, 66 K, .122 opponent average His two-inning outing Tuesday was the first since joining the Padres and first since Sept. 6, 2024, with the A's. Has 21 saves, which is tied for second in MLB with Bryan Baker of the Tampa Bay Rays. Cade Smith of the Cleveland Guardians has an MLB-best 26 saves. Of his 32 appearances, he has 22 with multiple strikeouts. Random Stats The Padres 1-0 win over Atlanta was not only their seventh shutout of the season, but their third of the 1-0 variety. The Padres have eight 1-0 wins since the beginning of 2025, the most in MLB. Samad Taylor's 12-game hitting streak came to an end with an 0-for-3 Monday. It was the longest by a Padre this year and was tied for the third-longest active streak. Jason Adam's perfect ninth inning Wednesday was his first since May 27. Friday's 7-1 triumph over the Dodgers gave the Padres a positive run differential (316-315) for the first time since May 29. Saturday's result, however, changed that. The Padres turned four double plays Friday, tying the single-game high in MLB this season. The Friars last turned four DPs on June 4, 2024, vs. the Los Angeles Angels. Nine of Gavin Sheets' 13 homers this season have either tied the game or put the Padres ahead for good. Of the Padres' 44 games at Petco Park, 35 have been sellouts, including all six games on this homestand. Saturday's attendance of 45,159 was the third-largest crowd this season The Padres honored Spanish-language radio broadcaster Eduardo Ortega for 40 years with the team by having him throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The top four affiliates for the San Diego Padres wrapped up their series Sunday with a a 2-2 showing. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas were edged 2-1 by Sugar Land, the Double-A San Antonio Missions prevailed over Arkansas 5-3, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps were shut out by Lake County 6-0 and the Low-A Lake Elsinore TinCaps rallied for a 6-4 win. Padres Minor-League Transactions San Diego Padres signed free-agent 1B Nick Solak signed a minor-league contract and assigned to El Paso Chihuahuas. RHP Bernard Jose assigned to San Antonio Missions from Fort Wayne TinCaps. San Antonio Missions transferred OF Kai Murphy to the Development List. Chihuahuas Held To 2 Hits In Loss; Jake Cronenworth Goes 0-For-4 The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas were held to just two hits, with the host Sugar Land Space Cowboys scoring twice in the sixth inning for a 2-1 victory. The Chihuahuas (36-45) only won once in the six game series, the first of the second half. Padres right-handed starter Esteban German was the listed starter for the Chihuahuas, but did not pitch. The Padres have not named a starter for Monday's series opener at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs. It is right-hander Griffin Canning's turn in the rotation. Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, playing in the field for the first time in his third game of his rehab assignment as he makes his way back from an April concussion. Cronenworth grounded out to third in the first inning, grounded out to second in the fourth, struck out swinging in the fifth and grounded out to first in the ninth. Cronenworth started at second base and shifted to first base in the eighth. His only defensive plays were a popout at second base and a throw to complete a strikeout while at first. The Space Cowboys scored twice in the sixth and Marcos Castanon homered for the Chihuahuas in the ninth, his 12th long ball of the season and just El Paso's second hit of the game. Bryce Johnson had a one-out double in the sixth to break up the no-hit bid. Chihuahuas outfielder Carlos Rodriguez drew a seventh-inning walk to keep his on-base streak alive at 35 games. Chihuahuas right-handed starter Miguel Cienfuegos went a season-high three hitless innings, striking out five and walking one, with right-hander Michael Flynn following with two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out one. Right-hander Ty Adcock gave up the two sixth-inning runs, but right-hander Andrew Moore went 1⅔ scoreless innings, allowing one hit but walking three and striking out four. The Missions (33-42) dropped four of the six games in their first series of the second half and went 6-6 on their two-week road trip. Padres right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez made his first appearance since being sent to the minors June 19 to get a break. Rodriguez pitched a perfect eighth inning, striking out one while throwing just 10 pitches, including eight strikes. Rodgiuez's outing came after Yost went five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts. It was the third outing in a row where Yost went at least five innings. Right-hander Bernard Jose then went the next two, allowing just a hit and punching out two. Right-hander Johan Moreno earned his fifth save with a pair of strikeouts in a perfect ninth. The Missions jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Albert Fabian's second-inning two-out RBI double that scored Luis Verdugo. The Travelers tied it in the bottom of the third, then Cunningham put the Missions on top for good with a solo blast to left-center leading off the fourth. Cunningham, in his first week with the Missions, had a team-high 15 homers for High-A Fort Wayne before his promotion. The Missions made it 4-1 in the fifth as a run scored on Kai Roberts' double-play grounder and Tirso Ornelas plated Carson Tucker with his 18th double of the season. The Travelers trimmed it to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, but Cunningham restored a two-run lead on a single to center that brought in Brendan Durfee. The TinCaps (32-43, 5-4 second half) were blanked for the second time in this six-game series, which the teams split. Alex McCoy (Padres Mission's No. 14 prospect), Carlos Rodriguez and Oswaldo Linares each had two of the TinCaps' seven hits, with Linares doubling. Rodriguez also walked once, while Luke Cantwell had a pair of walks. Ryan Wideman, Padres Mission's No. 4 prospect, singled and had his fourth steal of the week since being promoted to the TinCaps, boosting his minors-leading total to 47. TinCaps left-handed starter Jamie Hitt needed 56 pitches to get through two innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk with one strikeout, but he did give up a pair of homers. Both of those homers came in a three-run first inning, with the Captains scoring one each in the second, third and fourth innings. The win was just the second in the six-game series for the Storm, who are 41-34 overall and 2-7 in the second half after winning the first-half South Division title in the California League. Bradley Frye went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Grego two hits and two RBIs, Yimy Tovar drove in a pair and Yoiber Ocopio reached base three times with a pair of walks and scored twice. The Grizzlies scored all four of their runs in the top of the first inning. It stayed 4-0 until the bottom of the seventh. Facing the first Grizzlies reliever of the game, Frye led off the seventh with the Storm's second hit, Ocopio walked and Grego doubled home Frye to make it 4-1. After two strikeouts, Tovar singled to left to bring in Ocopio and Grego and trim the deficit to 4-3. In the eighth, following another pitching change, Dawson Willis had a bunt single with one out and went to third on a throwing error by the third baseman, then Frye singled again to bring in Willis and tie the game. Ocopio singled and Grego broke the tie with his opposite-field single to left to score Frye from second. Pinch-hitter George Bilecki singled to load the bases and, after yet another pitching change, Qrey Lott was hit by a pitch to plate the final run. While Storm right-handed starter Isaiah Lowe gave up the four first-inning runs in his three-inning outing is his second appearance for Lake Elsinore this season, the bullpen of left-hander Cal Riehel (three innings, one hit), right-hander Daichi Moriki, right-hander Luis Maracara (two strikeouts) and right-hander Yoesmerli Beltre held the Grizzlies scoreless and to just one hit the rest of the way. Maracara got the win and Beltre earned the save, both in their Storm debut after being promoted from the Arizona Complex League before the game. With the 2026 MLB Draft just around the corner, it is time to take a look back at how the San Diego Padres' selections from 2025 are faring in their first full seasons in pro ball. There are many caveats, as this is a big development year for all these prospects, with news and updates on major and minor injuries hard to come by. This recap also doesn't include free agents signed following last year's draft, such as Alex McCoy, or members of the international signing class. Here is a rundown of all of last year's draft picks, ordered by the round they were selected (all stats as of the last weekend of June). 1. Kruz Schoolcraft, LHP It shouldn't have been a surprise that the Padres took a high school left-handed starting pitcher with the 25th overall pick, as they did the same thing at No. 25 the year before, when they got Kash Mayfield. But Schoolcraft, a 6-foot-8 19-year-old from Portland, Ore., hasn't experienced the same success Mayfield did after making his pro debut. Schoolcraft was considered more of a project by draft experts and that is exactly what is happening in his first full season of pro ball. He made a token start in 2025, but has since made 12 starts with a 6.81 ERA, walking 15.1% of hitters and striking out 24.9% in 39⅔ innings. It would seem that Schoolcraft will spend the entire year at Lake Elsinore unless something changes drastically in the second half. 2. No selection Forfeited for signing right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta, who received a qualifying offer from the Boston Red Sox. 3. Ryan Wideman, CF At this point, the 22-year-old out of Western Kentucky is the star of the draft class. The center fielder leads the minors in stolen bases and has made changes at the plate that have led to more contact, allowing him to use his speed to make a difference on the basepaths. He put up a .314/.389/.504 slash line with six homers and 24 RBIs at Lake Elsinore. He also had 20 doubles and 43 steals (in 56 chances) before getting bumped up to High-A Fort Wayne for the second half of the season. Those tools make him a very dynamic player and someone to keep an eye on. 4. Michael Salina, RHP The 22-year-old right-handed starter made two starts in May in the Arizona Complex League, but has not appeared in a game since. Those games were his first since undergoing Tommy John surgery during his final season at St. Bonaventure. The Padres still saw the potential in Salina, spending a fourth-round draft choice on him. He hit 99 mph on his four-seamer in his initial outing and sat a few ticks below that. But it is concerning that he hasn't pitched since. 5. Ty Harvey, C Another in a deep stack of catchers the Padres have in the pipeline, the 19-year-old Harvey, selected out of a Florida high school, is currently on the 60-day injured list at Lake Elsinore after his left hand was broken by an opposing hitter on a catcher's interference play at the end of May. He could be back by the end of July. He missed a month before that with a quad injury. When in the lineup, he was an offensive force, producing a .338/.449/.431 slash line with no homers, nines RBIs and six steals in 21 games. He did draw 13 walks, which shows promise. His athleticism could also see him move to from behind the plate, possibly to first. He was a key pick, as the Padres gave Harvey a $1.5 million signing bonus, the second-highest in the class behind Schoolcraft, to forgo attending Florida State. 6. Jaxon Dalena, RHP After appearing in three games for Lake Elsinore last year, the 24-year-old right-handed starter, who attended Shippensburg, is on the 60-day injured list. 7. Kerrington Cross, 3B-1B The 24-year-old corner infielder is a bat-first prospect as he showed in putting up a 1.075 OPS in the first half at Lake Elsinore, which earned him a promotion to Fort Wayne. Cross hit 11 homers, drove in 53 and stole 17 bases in 58 games with the Storm. He was the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year at Cincinnati after slashing .396/.526/.647 as a senior, with terrific plate discipline. In the first half, he walked 46 times to 53 strikeouts in 58 games after a 50-35 split at Cincy. Cross played more first base than third at Lake Elsinore. 8. Jamie Hitt, LHP The Padres put the soon-to-be 24-year-old in the Fort Wayne rotation after a relief appearance at Lake Elsinore for his season debut. The left-hander, selected out of Oklahoma, has overall been pretty solid, with six of his 11 starts going at least five innings, including two six-inning outings and one 6⅔. Hitt doesn't have big strikeout stuff, topping out at a season high of five, and he has had some issues with walks, with two or more in 10 of his 12 appearances. After being a starter in two years at Texas Tech and his first two years at Oklahoma, Hitt was mainly a reliever as a senior in 2025, a role he excelled at. But as a lefty, the Padres will give Hitt every chance as a starter. 9. Will Koger, RHP The 23-year-old out of Arizona State is a right-handed reliever with an relatively mundane fastball at 98 mph, but his gyro slider had a 46% swing-and-miss rate with the Sun Devils, where he transferred to after three years at Louisville. He had 34 strikeouts in 24⅓ innings at Lake Elsinore before being moved up to Fort Wayne. His strikeout rate was at 28.1% in the first half, with a walk rate of 13.2% that could use some improvement. He did notch six saves at Lake Elsinore. 10. Justin DeCriscio, SS The 23-year-old shortstop from North Carolina State earned an early promotion to Fort Wayne after a .311/.363/.544 slash line with three homers and 18 RBIs in 28 games at Lake Elsinore. Offense has been a little tougher to come by for DeCriscio since he was moved up as he had a .246/.357/.373 slash line in 35 games. DeCriscio's offense should come as he has was named the second-best pure hitter in this class by Baseball America. He makes good contact and didn't chase much at N.C. State. 11. Truitt Madonna, C Drafted out of Ballard High School in Seattle, the 19-year-old has taken advantage of more playing time due to injuries with Lake Elsinore, seeing action not only at catcher, but at first base and designated hitter as well. Madonna has as .242/.346/.365 slash line with one homer and 36 RBIs in 60 games. He gave up a scholarship to UCLA for a $654,000 signing bonus. As with other catchers in the system, Madonna, at 6-foot-3, has good size behind the plate and scouts see a potential for more power in his game, but will need to prove he can hit to move up. 12. George Bilecki, OF The 22-year-old selected from Division II Lewis University in Illinois has had a few noteworthy homers for Lake Elsinore thus far, with midseason promotions likely opening a door for more playing time. Bilecki has a .197/.368/.340 slash line with four homers and 26 RBIs in 54 games this year after putting up a .128/.226/.170 mark in 18 games last year with the Storm. 13. Dylan Grego, SS The switch-hitting versatile former Ball State star has had quite a first half of the season already from a travel perspective. He started the season at High-A Fort Wayne, was sent down to Low-A Lake Elsinore after 24 games, but then went up to Triple-A El Paso for a week to cover for some promotions to the MLB roster. The 22-year-old has played shortstop, second base and third base, but only put up a .204/.286/.310 slash line with two homers and 15 RBIs. Curiously, he went 9-for-18 in five games at El Paso. 14. Clay Edmondson, RHP The 23-year-old sidewinding reliever is perhaps the breakout performer of this class so far. Before being bumped up to Double-A San Antonio, Edmondson was among the minors leaders with 11 saves at High-A Fort Wayne. There, the former North Carolina-Asheville star posted a 1.67 ERA in 27 innings across 23 appearances, striking out 38 (33%) and walking 13 (11.3%). Edmondson made his pro debut last year at Lake Elsinore and earned a one-game appearance at Triple-A El Paso. 15. Ryan Reed, LHP Despite being listed on the active roster for the Padres in the Arizona Complex League, the 22-year-old left-handed reliever out of Pitt has yet to pitch this season. He did make two appearances for Lake Elsinore last year, going 2⅔ scoreless innings with three hits, one walk and one strikeout. 16. Cardell Thibodeaux, OF The first casualty of this draft class, Thibodeaux was released June 20 from the Arizona Complex League roster. The 22-year-old out of Southern had a slash line of .244/.392/.366 in 14 games this season after debuting at Lake Elsinore with a .108/.216/.138 mark in 21 games. 17. Tyler Schmitt, RHP One of a few late-round gems thus far, the 21-year-old picked out of Illinois has had more ups than downs with Lake Elsinore. He has made 11 starts and one relief appearance, with a 4.47 ERA in 54⅓ innings. Schmitt has struck out 59 (25.2%) and walked 28 (12%) in his debut season. He has turned in four scoreless starts, including back-to-back performances to begin May where he allowed a combined three hits and struck out 11. He then had an 11-strikeout game on June 13. 18. Landry Jurecka, RHP The 23-year-old right-handed reliever out of Queens University has had a rough beginning to his pro career. He made six appearances with Lake Elsinore with a 6.75 ERA in 9⅓ innings, then returned to the Storm to begin 2026, only to make two appearances get hurt and is now on an extended rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League. There, he has logged 17 innings over 10 appearances for a 5.82 ERA, walking four and striking out 17. 19. Jonathan Vastine, SS The 23-year-old former Vanderbilt shortstop is currently on the seven-day injured list for High-A Fort Wayne, which is where he reported after signing last year. The left-handed hitter played in 22 games in his debut season, producing a .235/.329/.309 slash line with one homer, seven RBIs and three stolen bases. In more of a backup role this season, Vastine has followed that up with a .147/.202/.294 mark with four homers and seven RBIs in 31 games. 20. Luke Cantwell, 1B Taken out of Pitt, where the first baseman was teammates with Reed, Cantwell is a contact-first left-handed hitter. At Lake Elsinore, he was one of the top hitters in the California League during the first half as he put up a .328/.475/.496 with a pair of homers and 30 RBIs. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas lost to Sugar Land 5-2, the San Antonio Missions were routed by Arkansas 9-1, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps came up short against Lake County 8-6 and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm fell 10-5. Javier allowed three hits and two walks in six shutout innings, striking out four. San Diego Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth, in his second game on his rehab assignment following his concussion, went 1-for-4 with a run scored as the Chihuahuas' designated hitter. Cronenworth struck out in the first inning, popped out to third in the third and grounded out to second in the sixth, all against Javier. His single was a pop fly to short that was booted and led to Cronenworth standing on third to lead off the ninth. Cronenworth is 3-for-8 in two rehab games. Chihuahuas right-handed starter Jhony Brito was nearly as good, though. Brito went five innings, giving up three runs all unearned on two hits and two walks with six punchouts. He did give up one home run in a three-run first inning. The three unearned runs were courtesy of a throwing error by third baseman Clay Dungan to rehabbing Astros infielder Nick Allen. A walk preceded a three-run homer with one out. Brito recovered to retire 13 of the last 15 batters he faced. Sugar Land added two runs in the sixth before the Chihuahuas foiled the shutout in the ninth. Following Cronenworth's lone hit off right-hander Alimber Santa, Pablo Reyes' comebacker was deflected by Santa for an infield single, scoring Cronenworth and putting Reyes on second following a throwing error. Two outs later and with Reyes now on third, Romeo Sanabria drove him home with a single to right. Mason McCoy had two hits for the Chihuahuas, including his 10th double of the season, along with his 17th stolen base. DeCriscio's homer, his sixth of the year, was a two-out solo shot in the sixth inning that pulled the TinCaps within 6-3. The Captains scored twice more in the seventh, but the TinCaps put together a rally in the ninth. Zach Evans plated a run as he grounded into a double play, Wideman, who also had a third-inning sacrifice fly, singled home a run and DeCriscio pulled the TinCaps within 8-6 on his RBI single. Wideman was on second before a pitching change, with a wild pitch moving him to third. But Alex McCoy flew out to left field to end the game. Jake Cronenworth Homers, Has 2 Hits To Spark Chihuahuas Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth homered in the first plate appearance of his rehab assignment and also doubled, while Blake Hunt also went deep and drove in four runs as the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas rolled past the host Sugar Land Space Cowboys 8-1. Clay Dungan hit a solo homer for the Chihuahuas, with Hunt and Nick Pratto joining Cronenworth with two hits. Cronenworth, who had four plate appearances and played the field for seven innings, has been on the seven-day concussion list since May 5 following an incident about two weeks prior. This was his first game after facing live pitching at the team's complex in Arizona. After Pablo Reyes drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, Cronenworth cranked a 3-2 changeup 413 feet to right field with a 107.5 mph exit velocity. However, Arkansas scored three times in the bottom of the first. The teams traded second-inning runs with Hoffman doubling home Luis Verdugo, who had walked. Arkansas scored another in the third for a 5-2 lead, then added a pair on the sixth. The Missions got one back in the seventh as Hoffman had a two-out single and Chris Sargent Jr. doubled him home. After a poor experience with the Milwaukee Brewers, infielder Luis Rengifo is getting a chance with the San Diego Padres. Rengifo, a second baseman-third baseman, has signed a minor-league contract with the San Diego Padres, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported Friday. Rengifo was released by the Brewers after putting up a .205/.280/.254 slash line with no homers and 19 RBIs in 57 games while starting at third base. Rengifo will report to Triple-A El Paso. The Brewers signed Rengifo to a one-year, $3.5 million contract just before spring training following the trade of Caleb Durbin to the Boston Red Sox. I admit our Padres Mission Top 20 prospects are a work in progress, with a couple names I like still missing from this list or not as high as they should be. I'm left scratching my head at where fans have placed a couple others (is the fan base in Fort Wayne stuffing the ballot box???). Anyways, we didn't have a lot of movement in this update as we did last month, which is why I consider it progress as we rank San Diego Padres prospects. Thanks to everyone who voted! (Scroll past the two new players to see the full list.) We have two new entries with this update and, up until a few days ago, they were teammates. No. 15: Jesus Castro, RHP, Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm Bats-throws: Left-Right Age: 19 Acquired: Signed as international free agent in January 2025 (Mexico). He just turned 19 at the beginning of the month, yet the 5-foot-11 right-handed starter has proven to be very reliable in his brief time in the Padres' system. Last year in the Dominican Summer League, Castro pitched 43⅓ innings over 11 games (eight starts) with a 5.9% walk rate and 27.1% strikeout rate to go along with a .194 opponent average. Going up to full-season ball this year at Low-A Lake Elsinore, Castro has already made 11 starts and is at 48 innings, with his walk rate up a bit at 8.1% and strikeouts rate at a very similar 26.8%. His opponent average has also climbed to .265. He had a career-high 12 strikeouts June 10 vs. Ontario. Castro won't blow you away, as he makes a living by generating a lot of movement on his pitches. His four-seamer sits at 92 mph, yet has 19 inches of arm-side run, and a 77 mph slider that moves 17 inches to the glove side with a low arm slot. Castro is the younger brother of another Padres prospect, Manuel Castro, who is on the injured list at Double-A San Antonio. No. 20: Winyer Chourio, RHP, High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps Bats-throws: Right-Right Age: 22 Acquired: Signed as international free agent in May 2024 (Venezuela). The 6-foot-2 right-handed starter was the ace of a Storm team that won the first-half South Division championship in the California League, which earned him a promotion to High-A Fort Wayne. In 12 appearances, the last 11 bing starts, Chourio pitched 51⅔ innings with an 11.7% walk rate and a robust 34.6% strikeout rate. His 74 punchouts rank second in the Cal League. He had a career-high 10 strikeouts May 10, then followed that up with nine more punchouts in his next start. This season is a total breakout after he put up a combined 6.34 ERA in 21 games (five starts) in 2025 between the Arizona Complex League and Lake Elsinore (nine games, two starts). Chourio has improved the quality of his pitches in 2026, which is reason for his improved performance. His fastball is up a tick to 93 mph and has more life, while his curveball is at 75 mph and has more purpose after utilizing a loopy breaker previously. He also has a nice changeup in the mid-80s that should help him remain a starter as he climbs the ladder. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas were blanked by Sugar Land 11-0, the Double-A San Antonio Missions fell to Arkansas 12-7, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps didn't score in an 8-0 loss to Lake County and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm came up short vs. Fresno 8-7. Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth was scheduled to make his first rehab appearance following a concussion, but the paperwork was finished in time to allow him to play, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Storm right-hander Lan-Hong Su, a 19-year-old international signing in October from Taiwan, gave up four runs in 2⅔ innings in his Lake Elsinore debut. He allowed four hits, while walking one and striking out two. Fresno scored once in the top of the first, but the Storm came back in the bottom half on a Dylan Grego one-out double, Jose Verdugo was hit by a pitch with two outs and Ocopio brought them both home with a double. The Grizzlies tied it in the top of the second, scored twice in the third, two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth and seventh for an 8-2 lead. But the Storm made a furious comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Yimy Tovar singled, Dawson Willis walked and Grego hit a grounder to short that was booted, allowing Tovar to score. Qrey Lott struck out, but reached on a wild pitch with Willis scoring and Grego going to third. Sean Boyle's Emergency Start Foiled As Chihuahuas Stumble Late Despite a strong start from right-hander Sean Boyle, the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas succumbed to a late surge by the host Sugar Land Space Cowboys 7-1. Carlos Rodriguez went 3-for-4 for the Chihuahuas to extend his on-base streak to 32 games, while Nick Pratto had a pair of hits and Marcos Castanon drove in the only run on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Tears finished a triple shy of the cycle. The Captains scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth and had runners on the corners when the final out was recorded. Right-hander Winyer Chourio picked up where he left off at Low-A Lake Elsinore in his TinCaps debut. Chourio allowed just one run on five hits but did walk three while punching out four over five innings. He did give up a homer. Ryan Wideman, another player just up from Lake Elsinore and Padres Mission's No. 5 prospect, singled and stole three bases, extending his minors-leading total to 46. Cantwell, who had two hits, hit a solo homer in the second inning after hitting just two at Lake Elsinore. He also doubled in a three-run fifth inning that put the TinCaps up 5-1. Tears' ninth homer of the season came one out after Cantwell went deep. The Storm, leading 5-2, tacked on what would prove to be two important runs in the top of the ninth as Wideman singled home Tears, with a wild pitch bringing in the second run. A leadoff error by Cantwell, the first baseman, opened the door for the Captains in the bottom of the ninth. Right-hander Will Koger, in his High-A debut, walked three straight after the error to bring in a run before he was replaced by left-hander C.J. He pitched in 10 games for the Storm last year. Right-hander Brandon Langley struck out two and allowed three hits in two innings, while right-hander Sean Barnett picked up his first professional save despite allowing a run on a hit and a walk while getting a strikeout. After Fresno jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, the Storm came back with two in the bottom half as Yimy Tovar had a sacrifice fly that was dropped by the left fielder, allowing Ocopio, who had doubled and stolen third, to score and putting Tovar at first. Conner Westenburg reached on a forceout that erased Tovar, then stole second and third, giving him 29 on the year. Willis doubled to bring in Westenburg. Willis hit his second homer with the Storm in the fifth inning, a solo shot, to go up 3-1 and Tovar had an RBI single in the sixth for a 4-1 lead. Chihuahuas Walk 13 In Loss As German Marquez Appears In Relief In a stat line straight out of Nuke LaLoosh lore, the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas walked 13, a season high, and struck out 15, also a season high, in dropping a 12-5 decision to the host Sugar Land Space Cowboys to open the second half of the Pacific Coast League schedule. Padres right-handed starter German Marquez made a brief relief appearance in his fifth rehab game as he comes back from right forearm irritation. Marquez came on with one out and one on in the second inning and the Chihuahuas up 1-0. He allowed the inherited runner to score and gave up another in 1⅔ innings, giving up three hits while walking two and striking out three. The run he gave up came on a homer in the third inning. Marcos Castanon hit a three-run homer, drove in four and had two hits, as did Carlos Rodriguez and Pablo Reyes. While Marquez got the loss, the damage done by the Space Cowboys came off right-hander Michael Flynn, who was tagged for five third-inning runs on four hits and two walks while getting just one out, putting Sugar Land up 7-1. Castanon hit his three-run blast, his 11th homer of the year, in a four-run fifth inning, but the Space Cowboys pulled two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth to go up 9-5. Albert Fabian also homered as part of a two-hit, two-RBI night, while Ryan Jackson also had a pair of hits and drove in two and Kai Roberts had two hits and scored twice. Ornelas hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot in the third, giving him 10 homers. Fabian's blast was his fifth this year. Yost retired the first nine Travelers of the game before giving up a leadoff homer in the fourth inning and then gave up a one-out double in the sixth. But those would be the only hits against the Missions. Right-hander Sadrac Franco struck out five of the six hitters he faced in his two innings and right-hander Johan Moreno was perfect in the ninth, striking out one. Watson gave up the only hit during his six-inning start, a homer leading off the fourth inning by Jace LaViolette, and two of his four walks came in the second inning, leading to another run. Watson did strike out three in earning his first professional win in five decisions since debuting this season. Varmette followed with a perfect seventh and Salazar finished the final two innings, walking one and striking out four for the 18th one-hitter in TinCaps history. The TinCaps were down 2-1 entering the top of the sixth, when they batted around and scored four times. After Rosman Verdugo singled home Alex McCoy to tie the game, Tears singled to center, bringing in newcomer Kerrington Cross and Verdugo for a 4-2 lead. Two outs later, Ryan Wideman, another promotion, singled Tears to third and Justin DeCriscio drove home Tears to make it 5-2. Storm right-handed starter Jesus Castro was roughed up in the first inning, giving up six runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts, the only outs he would record on the night. Storm shortstop Jorge Quintana booted a grounder by the second batter of the game, contributing to the three unearned runs. The Storm didn't get going until the sixth inning, when Bilecki hit his fourth homer of the season to make it 6-1. The late start to the season for Lucas Giolito has been interrupted. The San Diego Padres on Tuesday placed the right-handed starter on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right elbow. Left-hander JP Sears was called up from Triple-A El Paso. Giolito, the last of MLB's top free agents to sign, signed a one-year, $3 million contract April 22, nearly a month after Opening Day, and spent another three-plus weeks getting his arm in game shape in the minors. But he has been inconsistent in his seven games, which included the last two with an opener to try and give him a path to success. But Giolito has produced a 6.07 FIP (5.16 ERA), with career worsts of a 16.7% walk rate and 13% strikeout rate. His last start came in Sunday's series finale against the Texas Rangers, a 4-3 loss, in which Giolito lasted just four innings, giving up all four runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Sears, the other piece the Padres got from the A's in the Mason Miller deal at last year's trade deadline, has been in the minors all season. The biggest impact was felt at High-A Fort Wayne, where the TinCaps have eight new players, and Low-A Lake Elsinore, with six players joining the Storm. Among Padres Mission's Top 20 prospects, No. 5 Ryan Wideman, No. 14 Tucker Musgrove and No. 19 Bryan Balzer were the only ones to change levels, but not the only interesting names. Let's check in on the San Diego Padres prospects who made a mark in the last week (check out Padres Mission's latest Top 20 rankings as well!): Clay Edmondson, RHP, High-A Fort Wayne Season stats: 2-3, 1.67, 23 games (all relief), 11 saves (13 chances), 27 IP, 13 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 13 BB, 38 K, .134 opponent average You don't expect a relief pitcher to retire every batter they face, although that would be nice. But the sidewinding right-handed closer for the TinCaps had as good of a week as you can. The 14th-round draft choice last year out of North Carolina-Asheville retired nine of 10 hitters in three appearances. The one blemish was a two-out walk in Tuesday's game against the South Bend Cubs. But that was also the game in which he struck out three. Edmondson is second in the minors with 11 saves, even though only one of last week's three games resulted in a save. In his two outings before last week, Edmondson had one rocky game and another where he took the loss in a walk-off. The latter one came as he was in his second inning and issued two of his three walks in the game. That was the second game in which he allowed multiple walks and they came on back-to-back outings. The first of those was his worst outing of the season. Edmondson got just two outs, the second time this year he didn't get at least three, on June 5 vs. Lake County, giving up two homers and three runs. Romeo Sanabria, 1B, Double-A San Antonio Season stats: .247/.345/.394, 66 games, 34 R, 13 2B, 0 3B, 8 HR, 32 RBIs, 36 BB, 72 K, 5 SB, 2 CS After a rough April in which the left-handed-hitting first baseman had a .176/.290/.282 slash line, Sanabria has bounced back with two very nice months (.283/.400/.413 in May, .284/.338/.500 in June). The 18th-round draft pick in 2022 earned a promotion to Triple-A El Paso with that progress and will debut at that level Tuesday. This was his second year at Double-A after slashing .257/.309/.376 with 12 homers and 56 RBIs in 119 games there last season. Sanabria isn't your prototypical first baseman. Power is a lesser part of his game, whereas contact is more prevalent. After his walk rate dipped down to 7.6% last year, it is back up to 12.4% this year. His strikeout rate is up a few points from 21.4% to 24.7%. His power is also slightly improved, with his ISO at .147 this year after being at .119 in 2025. Sanabria had a career-best 12 homers last year after 11 in 2024. He has eight at the halfway point of this season, so he's on pace to eclipse that number, especially as he moves to the offensive-minded Pacific Coast League. Winyer Chourio, RHP, Low-A Lake Elsinore Season stats: 2-1, 3.31 12 games (11 starts) 51⅔ IP, 38 H, 19 R, 19 ER, 25 BB, 74 K, .204 opponent average In his final start before heading to Fort Wayne, the right-handed starter turned in what feels like a typical outing: six innings, one run, four hits, two walks, five strikeouts. It came in a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Giants that clinched the California League's South Division first-half championship. With the help of a first-inning double play, Chourio faced the minimum until a two-out single in the eighth. While he has a few big strikeout games (one at 10 K's, two at nine), Chourio hasn't necessarily dominated. He has walked 13 in his last five starts, including a one-walk game. He does limit contact, with his season opponent batting average at .204. Chourio has gone six innings in each of his last two starts, which matches his career high from an outing in 2023 in the Dominican Summer League. Kerrington Cross, 3B, Low-A Lake Elsinore Season stats: .313/.467/.608, 58 games, 49 R, 15 2B, 2 3B, 11 HR, 43 RBI, 46 BB, 53 K, 17 SB, 2 CS An on-base machine, the third baseman went 8-for-16 with three walks, a pair of homers and five RBIs. He also had three steals. That type of production against San Jose also earned him a promotion to Fort Wayne. Most of that came in the final three games of the six-game series, where he went 6-for-12 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs. Cross has a nice combination of getting on base and power. He has walked 46 times in 58 games and drilled 11 homers. His walks and homers are tied for third in the Cal League, while his .313 batting average is ninth and 49 runs is 10th. Cross has a 20.2% walk rate and 23.2% strikeout rate. He is also a stolen base threat, swiping 17 with the Storm. Dylan Grego, SS, Triple-A El Paso Season stats: .201/.283/.306, 44 games, 17 R, 8 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 16 BB, 41 K, 2 SB, 1 CS Grego might wake up each morning wondering what city he is in. After all, in addition to regular minor-league travel, he is on his third minor-league level this season. The shortstop started the season at High-A Fort Wayne, then got knocked down to Low-A Lake Elsinore before jumping all the way up to Triple-A El Paso due to players being promoted to the majors. The 13th-round draft choice last year out of Ball State only played in three of the six games against Corpus Christi in his first full week at Triple-A, but he made the most of his opportunity. He went 8-for-12 with three doubles and a homer with three multi-hit games after having three previously all season. His season got off to a rough start, going 0-for-19 in his first six games before finally getting a hit, leading to a dismal .109/.180/.218 slash line in April. His June has been much better as he has notched hits in seven of nine games for a .375/.417/.500 mark. Honorable Mention: Carlos Rodriguez, OF, Triple-A El Paso Before closing things out, I just wanted to give a nod to Rodriguez, who was included in last week's Hot Sheet, for his hitting streak, which reached 21 games before coming to an end. That didn't slow him down, though. After taking an 0-for-4 Thursday against the Reno Aces, Rodriguez came back with a 3-for-4 game, then an additional hit in the final two games of that series to give him hits in 25 of his last 26 games.
