On Friday, the four full-season San Diego Padres affiliates went 3-1. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas edged Sacramento 4-2, the Double-A San Antonio Missions blanked Amarillo, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps prevailed 8-5 and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm came up short against Stockton 14-10. Fitterer allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts in his first start since June 3 and matching his longest outing of the season, also going six on May 16. Right-hander Miguel Cienfuegos went two hitless innings, allowing a walk and a single, while right-hander Ethan Routzahn locked down his seventh save of the year with a walk and a strikeout in the ninth. Solak homered for the second game in a row when he went deep in the first inning. The River Cats tied it up with runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Hunt homered in back-to-back games as well, his fourth this year, in the bottom of the sixth to snap the tie and Rengifo went deep in the seventh for the second time in three games since joining the Chihuahuas after being released by the Milwaukee Brewers. Tirso Ornelas was on base three times and drove in a pair of runs for the Missions. Thurman, making his second start in three appearances and entering the game with a 5.91 ERA in 20 appearances, gave up only a two-out single in the third inning, walked one and struck out four, while also hitting two batters (same player twice). According to the Missions' pregame notes, Thurman stepped away from baseball completely after 2017 in the Los Angeles Dodgers' organization, only to return last year, when he joined the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League, then signing a minor-league deal with the Padres in the offseason. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the second round in 2013. Left-hander Harry Gustin pitched two perfect innings and right-hander Bernard Jose went the final three to pick up his first career Double-A save, allowing two hits and striking out one. The Missions grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Carson Tucker had a leadoff single, advanced to second, went to third on a groundout and scored on Ornelas' sacrifice fly to center. It remained 1-0 until the seventh. Francisco Acuna and Luis Verdugo walked to begin the inning, then pinch-hitter Ethan Salas, Padres Mission's No. 1 prospect, walked in a 10-pitch at-bat to load the bases. After a popout and a strikeout, Ornelas drew the fourth walk of the inning to bring in a run. The Loons made it 4-3 in the top of the sixth, but Costello got that back with his eighth homer of the year in the bottom half. The TinCaps pulled away in the seventh with three more runs on DeCriscio's one-out homer, his seventh, a hit by pitch, a double by Alex McCoy (Padres Mission's No. 14 prospect) and Rodriguez's single that scored two runs, the second one on a throwing error for an 8-3 advantage. Dylan Grego had two hits and drove in four, while Yimy Tovar also had two hits and a pair of RBIs and Conner Westenburg had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Storm. Storm left-handed starter Kruz Schoolcraft, Padres Mission's No. 5 prospect, was tagged for six runs in 4⅔ innings, with four coming in a six-run fifth inning. He gave up six hits, including a homer, and three walks while striking out four, pushing his ERA to 7.11. Right-hander Carson Swilling had a disastrous outing, giving up seven runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks while getting just two outs. Right-hander Isaiah Lowe was able to finish the game, going 3⅔ innings and striking out six while allowing a run on three hits and two walks. It was 2-2 after the top of the second and remained tied until the top of the fifth, when the Ports scored six runs and then added five more in the sixth for a sudden 13-2 advantage. But the Storm got one back in the bottom of the sixth, then poured in seven runs in the seventh. A one-out hit by pitch, single and walk loaded the bases when Qrey Lott became the second hit batter of the inning to bring in a run. Westenburg was also hit to force in a run and Grego cleared the bases with a double to pull the Storm within 13-8. Truitt Madonna walked, a wild pitch advanced both runners, then Tovar brought them home with a double to make it 13-10. Tovar made it to third on a wild pitch, but a strikeout ended the inning. The Storm got a runner to third in the eight, but couldn't score. The Ports tacked on a run in the top of the ninth, but the Storm had one last chance in the bottom half. Westenburg singled to left, the next two batters made outs and Tovar reached when the second baseman booted a grounder. That prompted a pitching change with Jose Verdugo getting hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the game. In all, the Storm had six batters hit by a pitch, including Lott twice. Following six straight losses, the San Diego Padres have lost two key players. Right-handed starter Randy Vasquez and catcher Freddy Fermin were placed on the 10-day injured list Friday by the Padres, who activated catcher Luis Campusano from the 10-day IL and called up right-hander Alek Jacob from Triple-A El Paso. Vasquez is on the IL with a bruised right ankle and Fermin with a head bruise. Campusano had been out since May 7 with a broken left big toe. Vasquez was injured in the first inning of Thursday's 12-7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers when he took a Mookie Betts smash off his right ankle. As he was heading to get X-rays, he fainted and was taken to a hospital in L.A., then was released Friday morning. Right-hander German Marquez, who pitched three innings of relief Thursday, can step into Vasquez's starting role. Fermin took a foul ball from Freddie Freeman off his mask and, a few pitches later, was on the mound for a conference when he started to exhibit signs of an injury and was removed from the game. Fermin spent time this season already on the concussion list, but this has been classified as a head bruise. Campusano will easily fill Fermin's shoes as the lead catcher with Rodolfo Duran the No. 2. Campusano had a slash line of .288/.362/.596 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 18 games before he was hurt. He appeared in two rehab games, going 2-for-6 with a homer, before being needed by the Padres. Jacob joins a Padres bullpen that needs a fresh arm after having to cover six innings Thursday due to a short start by Vasquez. He is up for the third time this season, but has pitched in just two games, allowing two runs in two innings with two walks and three strikeouts. San Diego Padres right-handed starter Randy Vasquez was back at the team hotel in Los Angeles on Friday morning after fainting Thursday night. Vasquez was nailed on the right ankle by a comebacker off the bat of Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts in the first inning of a 12-7 loss. Vasquez not only stayed in the game and finished the inning, but he went two more innings before being removed. As a precaution, he was en route to getting an X-ray on the ankle when he fainted at Dodger Stadium, manager Craig Stammen said on MLB Network Radio. Vasquez was then taken to a hospital. "That's great news in what could have been a really scary situation and definitely caught everybody off-guard," Stammen said. "But glad Randy's doing well, and X-rays were negative and all the tests came back pretty clean." Due to the fainting spell, the X-rays were not taken. The San Diego Padres have released one of their most productive minor-league hitters. Infielder Pablo Reyes was let go from Triple-A El Paso by the Padres, according to the transaction tracker on his MLB profile page. The move was dated Thursday, but posted Friday. No word on whether the 32-year-old had an out clause in his contract or the Padres felt they had too many bodies at Triple-A. Reyes had been a consistent offensive presence in the Chihuahuas' lineup, putting up a .310/.408/.491 slash line in 56 games with six homers, 33 RBIs and 15 stolen bases. Reyes' batting average was second on the team and his 19 doubles were tops for the Chihuahuas, who recently got three players added to the roster in Luis Rengifo, Nick Solak and Will Wagner. Solak and Wagner were recently up with the Padres, while Rengifo was signed after being released by the Milwaukee Brewers. This was Wagner's first game since being optioned back to the Chihuahuas. Wolf recovered from the rough first two innings to finish a season-high six innings in which he gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits with three walks and five punchouts. Right-hander Andrew Moore followed, but allowed his first run in 11 appearances (since May 22) in 1⅔ innings on three hits and two walks. Moore did not strike out a batter for the first time since his second game of the season (April 14). This was his third Triple-A appearance after being promoted last week. The San Diego Padres will be without one of their leverage arms until at least after the All-Star break. The Padres on Thursday put right-handed setup man Jason Adam on the 15-day injured list with a strained right shoulder. Right-handed starter German Marquez, out for two months with right forearm irritation, was activated from the 15-day IL before Thursday's series opener against the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. No specifics were given as to when Adam was injured, although he did pitch the eighth inning of Monday's 3-2 walk-off loss to the Chicago Cubs. Adam allowed a run on two hits with a strikeout. That was his third appearance in four days and fourth in six days as the Padres' bullpen has had to cover for a starting rotation that has lacked quality innings. Adam has generally been good this season, although a tad erratic at times. In 36 appearances and 32⅓ innings, with a career-best 6% walk rate and a career-worst 16.4% strikeout rate. Adam had a 25.9% strikeout rate last year before his season ended with a quadriceps injury and his career rate is 27.7%. Marquez, signed just as spring training began to fill out the back end of the rotation after a 10-year career with the Colorado Rockies, struggled through six starts, putting up a 6.65 FIP (5.76 ERA) with a 9.4% walk rate and 14.8% strikeout rate. The walk rate is worse than his career mark of 7.3%, while his strikeout numbers are on par for his last two seasons, but below his career rate of 21.6%. But Musgrove, Padres Mission's No. 12 prospect, walked the leadoff hitter, threw two wild pitches and walked the next batter before a popup single by a pinch-hitter scored the tying run. The slugging outfielder had his second career multihomer game of his young career, belting a pair of two-run shots, but the host High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps fell to the Great Lakes Loons 8-7. Tears hit his 10th homer of the season in the first inning, then added his 11th in the third to match his career high of four RBIs, set May 15, when he started to turn his season around. Kasen Wells had a double and two RBIs as part of a two-hit night as the TinCaps finished with seven hits. While Tears' first homer gave the TinCaps a 2-0 lead, the Loons came back to take the lead with one in the top of the second and a grand slam in the top of the third before Tears' second round-tripper, a 426-foot drive off the batter's eye in center, made it 5-4. But the Loons added three more in the fourth to make it 8-4. Dawson Willis homered and Dylan Grego tripled, but the Storm managed just five hits while drawing eight walks. The Storm scored four runs in the bottom of the first as the first five batters walked to force in two runs, then an RBI groundout and Bradley Frye stole home to make it 4-0. Frye has 18 steals this year. The Ports scored twice in the top of the third, then Willis led off the bottom half with his third homer since being promoted a little more than two weeks ago from the Arizona Complex League, with the Ports then taking the lead for good with five runs in the top of the fourth. Storm right-handed starter Carlos Medina went three innings, giving up a pair of runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. The San Diego Padres' top two prospects are heading to the Futures Game. Catcher Ethan Salas, Padres Mission's No. 1 prospect, and left-handed starter Kash Mayfield, Padres Mission's No. 2 prospect, were named Wednesday to the showcase of MLB's top young minor-league players. Both players will represent the NL in the July 12 game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. This is the second selection for the 20-year-old Salas, who also played in the 2024 Futures Game. Salas was just activated off the seven-day injured list by the Double-A San Antonio Missions following a minor oblique injury. The left-handed hitter has a .277/.347/.427 slash line with seven homers, 33 RBIs and 13 steals in 56 games this year. He missed all but 10 games of 2025 with a stress fracture in his lower back. Salas was the No. 1 international player in the 2023 signing period. Mayfield, the Padres' first-round draft choice in 2024 (25th overall pick), has been having a mostly banner season at High-A Fort Wayne. In 12 starts, Mayfield has a 3.22 ERA with a 10.9% walk rate and 30.3% strikeout rate in 44⅔ innings. He also has allowed a .192 opponent batting average. He began the season with three scoreless starts in which he allowed just one hit (coming in the third game) covering 12 innings, with five walks and 16 strikeouts. Let's check in on the San Diego Padres prospects who made a mark in the last week (check out Padres Mission's latest Top 20 rankings as well!): Tirso Ornelas, OF, Double-A San Antonio Missions Season stats: .262/.331/.468, 66 games, 32 R, 18 2B, 0 3B, 11 HR, 34 RBI, 25 BB, 45 K, 1 SB, 1 CS The power-hitting outfielder has had quite the odyssey in the last two seasons. After being put on the 40-man roster in July 2024, he made his MLB debut in April 2025, playing in seven games. This spring, when the Padres needed a 40-man roster spot, Ornelas was designated for assignment, went unclaimed and, after spending all of 2024 and 2025 at Triple-A El Paso, he was assigned to Double-A San Antonio for 2026. After a slow April (.203/.278/.377), Ornelas has picked things up to raise his numbers to .262/.331/.468. That included a nice six games last week in which he slashed .346/.393/.731 (9-for-26) with three homers, four runs and five RBIs. San Antonio is a better place for prospects to develop than El Paso, so the Padres likely want to see more of Ornelas there before putting him back at Triple-A, where bad habits can pop back up. But he is also 26 and not forcing the issue, so his future remains murky at best. Eric Yost, RHP, Double-A San Antonio Missions Season stats: 3-2, 3.48, 13 games (8 starts), 1 save (1 chance) 51⅔ IP, 31 H, 20 R, 20 ER, 35 BB, 48 K, .177 opponent average The Missions are one of the rare teams that give a Tuesday starter a Sunday start in the same week. Yost had that opportunity last week and produced decent results. The 2023 17th-round draft choice out of Northeastern went six innings, with one run, two hits, three walks and three strikeouts in his first start against Arkansas, then followed that up with five innings, three runs, four hits, five walks and three strikeouts. The biggest takeaway is that his control was a bit off Sunday, but how much is that due to the same hitters seeing him twice in six days? Regardless, Yost has some qualities to like, including contact prevention. He has a really good .177 opponent batting average, but his walk rate is at 16%, his worst since turning pro. He is around the MLB average for strikeout rate at 21.9%, so limiting baserunners is key to his success. His walk rate in 2025 was 11% between High-A and Double-A, with that being at 15.5% in San Antonio. Yost also hit two batters in the second Arkansas start, giving him six plunked batters in the last four starts. He is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this offseason, so what he does in the second half will go a long way to helping the Padres make the decision on whether or not to protect him. Jackson Wolf, LHP, Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas Season stats: 5-5, 5.65 ERA, 18 games (11 starts), 63⅔ IP, 71 H, 43 R, 40 ER, 28 R, 63 K, .284 opponent average The left-handed starter had one of his best starts of the season last week. Facing the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the 2021 fourth-round draft choice out of West Virginia went five innings, punching out eight and walking four while allowing a run on three hits. It was just the third time he has had more than five strikeouts this year and one off his season high. Wolf, who made his MLB debut with one game in 2023 and hasn't been back up since, was in contention for a bullpen spot in spring training and now could be in line to come up as the Padres search for rotation solutions. His numbers are very similar this year to what he produced in 22 starts at El Paso last year. Wolf has a 9.6% walk rate and 21.6% strikeout rate this year, while allowing a .284 opponent batting average, resulting in an unsightly 1.55 WHIP. However, some of that you have to credit to the hitter-friendly PCL conditions. Braian Salazar, LHP, High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps Season stats: 3-3, 4.25 ERA, 25 games (all relief), 1 save (1 chance), 36 IP, 28 H, 17 R, 17 ER, 21 BB, 43 K, .217 opponent average The 21-year-old left-hander made two relief appearances last week against Lake County and allowed just one hit with five strikeouts and one walk. That included four punchouts in two hitless innings of the series opener in which he faced just one over the minimum. He pitched the final two innings as the TinCaps search for a new closer following Clay Edmondson's promotion to Double-A last week. Salazar has been really good over his last four appearances, giving up just one run in 7⅓ innings with five hits, a walk and eight strikeouts. He signed as an international free agent in January 2022 and has made the slow climb up the ladder to High-A Fort Wayne this year. But his numbers are also better this year, showing some significant process. He debuted in full-season ball in 2024 and posted ERAs of 6.08 in 2024 and 6.47 in 2025. Now, that number is almost two full runs less, in part to allowing fewer hits (he has a .217 opponent average this year, more than 20 points lower than each of the last two) and his walks are down a couple percentage points to 13.3%. A work in progress, but one to keep an eye on. Kai Roberts, OF, Double-A San Antonio Missions Season stats: .215/.328/.275, 60 games, 26 R, 6 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 19 BB, 62 K, 25 SB, 0 CS The switch-hitting outfielder doesn't bring a lot of offense to the table, but does provide speed and defense. He has yet to commit an error in 57 games between center field (56 games) and left. But last week against Arkansas, the 2024 seventh-round draft choice out of Utah had his best week of the season offensively, slashing .444/.545/.500 (8-for-18) with three walks, a double and one RBI. He was also hit by a pitch once, putting him on base 12 times. He took advantage of that to steal five bases. That gave him a perfect 25-for-25 on steals this season. He ranks sixth in the Texas League in steals and is the only one among the top 23 in the league yet to be caught. One of two players with the first name Kai on the Missions' roster (Kai Murphy, son of Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy, is the other), Roberts has made progress offensively even if his batting average doesn't show it. This season, he has a line-drive rate of 27.1%, which is up significantly from the 18.3% he had last year. Now 25 years old, Roberts has also been promoted a bit aggressively after appearing in 24 games in his draft year at Low-A Lake Elsinore, then 83 games last year at High-A Fort Wayne. Marquez, who was scheduled to make two starts last week but only appeared in one game in relief, came out of the bullpen again, but it didn't go well. Marquez came on to begin the sixth inning and got two groundouts around a double, then issued a walk, gave up a two-run double and then a run-scoring single before being removed. He threw 22 pitches, including 14 strikes, to the six batters he faced. Bryce Johnson had three hits and Clay Dungan had two and scored twice for the Chihuahuas. Chihuahuas right-handed starter Sean Boyle went five innings and gave up six runs on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts. He did give up a pair of homers. It marked back-to-back starts of 6⅔ innings, his season high, and the third of the year. The two runs scored in the seventh as Haynes ran out of gas. Right-hander Francis Pena got out of that jam and pitched a scoreless eighth, while right-hander Josh Mallitz finished up with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth. Bradley Frye went 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Storm pounded out 15 hits. Castro, Padres Mission's No. 15 prospect, got back on track after a couple of subpar outings to pick up his first Low-A victory. He went five innings for the third time in five June starts, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Right-hander Carson Swilling gave up a run in two innings, while right-hander Jeferson Villabona went two scoreless, each allowing one hit. The Storm trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, when they put up a four-spot. Verdugo had an RBI single to tie the game and Willis singled home a pair to put the Storm up 4-2, then scored on Frye's single. The made it 8-1 in the sixth as Conner Westenburg had an RBI single, then stole his 30th base of the season and scored on a two-run single by Bilecki. Ocopio drove in a run with a single in the seventh and Verdugo added the final one in the eighth, following Bilecki's triple with an RBI groundout. The time Ethan Salas spent on the injured list was indeed short. Salas, Padres Mission's No. 1 prospect, was activated from the seven-day injured list Tuesday by the Double-A San Antonio Missions. Salas was in the lineup at catcher and batting leadoff in the Missions' batting order. The 20-year-old top prospect for the San Diego Padres had been sidelined since sustaining a mild oblique injury during a June 17 doubleheader. He was placed on the IL the next day. Salas is having a really nice bounce-back season after missing all but 10 games last season due to a stress reaction in his lower back. The San Diego Padres are getting a key bat back for the offense and an arm for the bullpen. Second baseman Jake Cronenworth was activated Monday off the seven-day concussion list by the Padres for the series opener against the Chicago Cubs. Also, right-handed reliever Bradgley Rodriguez was called up from Double-A San Antonio. Right-handed reliever David Morgan was placed on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his left knee and infielder Will Wagner was optioned back to Triple-A El Paso. Cronenworth has been on the concussion list since May 5, but the incident that led to his injury actually happened a couple weeks before that, but the symptoms did not initially present themselves, which affected his performance in that time. Cronenworth played in three rehab games at Triple-A over the weekend, including a full game on defense Sunday. While he went 3-for-12 at the plate, he did hit a home run in his first plate appearance Thursday. Cronenworth was slashing .144/.272/.196 with one homer and four RBIs in 32 games. Rodriguez was sent to the minors June 19 to simply give himself a breather during his first full MLB season. Rodriguez appeared in one game over the weekend at Double-A, throwing a perfect eighth inning Sunday with a strikeout. Morgan has pitched much better after being sent down in late April, spending more than a month at Triple-A. He returned at the beginning of June and has posted a 2.08 ERA over 8⅔ innings in seven games with two walks and 11 strikeouts. He had eight walks and 11 strikeouts in his first 8⅓ innings with a 9.72 ERA before his demotion. Wagner showed well in his brief time up this year. He came up June 9 and played in 16 games, producing a .257/.422/.286 with a double and no RBIs. He did draw 10 walks. View full rumor
