Friday saw the San Diego Padres' four full-season affiliates go 2-2. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas were bashed by Las Vegas 15-9, the Double-A San Antonio Missions were blanked for a second game in a row by Frisco 10-0, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps soared to a win over Lake County 8-3 and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm dropped Visalia 5-1. Jagger Haynes Pounded In Triple-A Debut As Chihuahuas Clubbed Left-handed starter Jagger Haynes learned quickly about life in Triple-A environments as he gave up the first five of a seven-run third inning as the El Paso Chihuahuas were throttled by the host Las Vegas Aviators 15-9. Padres right-handed reliever Jeremiah Estrada made his third rehab appearance and second for the Chihuahuas, pitching a perfect seventh inning, striking out two. He threw 11 pitches, 10 for strikes. Estrada is coming back from right knee inflammation that has sidelined him since June 5. Haynes, Padres Mission's No. 13 prospect who was making his Triple-A debut after being promoted from Double-A San Antonio, only got one out in the third inning as he surrendered four hits and four walks while striking out four. In fact, the first three Chihuahuas pitchers gave up five runs each, with right-handers Daison Acosta and Logan Gillaspie doing the deed in one inning and 2⅔ innings, respectively. The Chihuahuas tried to keep pace offensively. Leadoff hitter Bryce Johnson had a pair of doubles among his three hits, driving in two and scoring once. Nick Solak, Marcos Castanon, Mason McCoy, Blake Hunt and Dustin Harris each had two hits as the Chihuahuas outhit the Aviators 17-15. McCoy also drove in a pair and scored twice, while stealing a base and Hunt had a triple. The Missions haven't scored in 20 innings. Koenig surrendered six runs (five earned) on seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts over five innings. Right-hander Bernard Jose gave up a run in two innings and right-hander Clay Edmondson three runs in two-thirds of an inning, the fifth time in six outings he has allowed a run. Catcher Chris Sargent pitched the final 1⅓ innings and didn't allow a hit. The RoughRiders scored five times in the fifth to take control. Ryan Jackson had a double leading off the second inning among the Missions' five hits. The Missions did put up a threat in the bottom of the ninth as, with two outs, Albert Fabian and Kai Murphy singled, forcing a pitching change. Wyatt Hoffman struck out to end the game. Wideman, Padres Mission's No. 4 prospect, stole his ninth and 10 bases since joining the TinCaps, giving him 53 for the season, matching Peyton Graham of the Double-A Erie SeaWolves and moving past Asbel Gonzalez of the High-A Quad Cities River Bandits, who has 52. Justin DeCriscio had two hits (including a double), two RBIs and two runs scored and Luke Cantwell was on base in all four plate appearances with two hits and two walks, driving in one and scoring another. Carlos Rodriguez also scored twice without the benefit of a hit, walking once and reaching on an error. TinCaps left-handed starter Kash Mayfield, Padres Mission's No. 2 prospect, lasted 2⅔ innings, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks, striking out three. But those would be the only runs the TinCaps would allow as left-hander Javier Chacon punched out six and yielded two hits over three innings, left-hander Braian Salazar, in his Midwest League-leading 33rd appearance, fanned four in and allowed just one hit in two innings and right-hander Jose Leclerc pitched a scoreless ninth in his minor-league rehab assignment. Cantwell had an RBI single in the second inning to tie it, then the Captains scored a pair in the top of the third. The TinCaps would tie it in the bottom of the fifth on Wideman's two-run single, then Verdugo put Fort Wayne ahead to stay with an RBI single in the sixth. Schoolcraft, Padres Mission's No. 5 prospect, walked five, but allowed just one run on four hits while striking out four. Right-hander Jordan Valenzuela struck out three in 2⅔ innings, allowing just one hit and walking one. Right-hander Yoesmerli Beltre went the final two innings, striking out three and yielding just a hit. Bradley Frye had a pair of hits and scored twice and Yoiber Ocopio also had two hits with an RBI and a run scored. The score was 1-1, with the Storm getting a third-inning sacrifice fly from Yimy Tovar, when they broke things open in the fifth. Frye had a leadoff single, Jorge Quintana had a double and Ocopio had his go-ahead RBI single. Following a pitching change, Tovar walked and a wild pitch plated Quintana to put the Storm up 3-1. The San Diego Padres have nearly completed signing all 21 of their selections from the recent MLB Draft. As expected, there is still one player who remains unsigned and is likely to remain that way. The Padres' bonus pool is $9,479,000 and with these reported figures by Baesball America, Padres Mission's Draft tracker has the team at $346,394 over, which falls within the allowable 5%. Teams pay a 75% on that overage. According to Baseball America, the Padres cemented deals with 20 draft picks. Here is the class in its entirety with signing bonuses: 1. Lord is the only player yet to be signed and with less than $100,000 emaining in that 5% threshold, will remain that way. No team in this current system has ever gone above 5%, which involves losing a first-round draft choice. Projected as the No. 54 draft prospect by Baseball America and No. 80 by MLB Pipeline, Lord has a commitment to Mississippi State. He took to Instagram following the fifth round of the draft to say that he did not wish to be drafted and would honor his college commitment. But Lord is also the teammate of Borthwick, the Padres' first-round selection, at South Walton High School in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., giving the Padres a decent shot to sign the right-handed starter. With just days until the deadline to sign draft picks, the San Diego Padres secured the services of another one of their 21 selections. Fourth-rounder Robbie Lavey, a catcher out of George Washington, received a signing bonus of $600,000 from the Padres, MLB Pipeline's Jonathan Mayo reported Friday. Lavey makes it the top four draft picks to have signed. They have six of their top seven picks, now just missing fourth-round compensation selection Alex Conover, an outfielder from Oklahoma State. The Chihuahuas used a three-run sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead before the Aviators struck for three of their own in the seventh. Marcos Castanon and Anthony Vilar each had two hits for the Chihuahuas, who had 10 hits and 10 walks. Chihuahuas right-handed starter Jhony Brito went three innings, allowing a pair of runs on three hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Right-hander Miguel Cienfuegos followed with one-run ball over three innings before right-hander Ethan Routzahn had a rare rough outing by allowing the three seventh-inning runs on five hits. Right-hander Michael Flynn pitched a scoreless eighth. Solak had an RBI single in the first and Romeo Sanabria a run-scoring groundout in the third that sandwiched a pair of second-inning solo homers from the Aviators. Kavares Tears then hit a potential double-play ball to the second baseman, whose throw to the shortstop was off-target and went into foul territory in left field, allowing two runs to score. In the six-run first, Conner Westenburg had a leadoff single and Yimy Tovar and Jorge Quintana walked to load the bases. After an RBI fielder's choice, Frye doubled in a run, chasing the starter. Bilecki greeted the reliever by cranking a 2-2 pitch out to right-center field for a three-run homer, his fifth of the season. Grego followed by drilling the next pitch over the tall wall in right field, putting the Storm up 6-0. The Rawhide scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead, then added three in the eighth. Storm right-handed starter Lan-Hong Su had his best outing since being promoted to the Storm. After giving up 12 runs in 7⅔ innings over his first three starts, Su pitched a perfect inning in his previous start. The San Diego Padres continue to make progress on signing their 21 draft choices. Third-rounder Ryan Lynch, a right-handed pitcher out of North Carolina, has signed with the Padres, MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis reported Thursday. Lynch received a signing bonus of $1 million, which is an overslot deal. The No. 97 pick had a slot value of $808,100. Check out the signings and how they impact the Padres' bonus pool in our Draft Tracker. Lynch's deal means the top three picks and five of the top 10 rounds (11 selections) and six of 21 overall have put pen to paper. That includes first-round pick Coleman Borthwick, who signed Wednesday. The 21-year-old Lynch, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, is likely to begin his pro career as a starter and possesses a power sinker that can get up to 97 mph while typically sitting at 94 mph. His results as a starter this spring were mixed, but the Padres are hoping to iron those out as he turns pro. If not, he projects as a potential late-inning reliever, possibly a closer. There is a scene in one of the early episodes of “Ted Lasso” where Sam Obisanya gets destroyed by Jamie Tartt during a practice, with the brash star then scoring a goal as Obisanya looks on, slapping the pitch in frustration. Seeing this, Coach Lasso calls Obisanya over to give him a little advice. “You know what the happiest animal on Earth is?” Lasso asks rhetorically as Obisanya shakes his head. “It’s a goldfish. You know why? Got a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish, Sam.” Obisanya doesn’t immediately understand the message, but eventually realizes that in sports, you have to forget what just happened to you as another opportunity to perform comes at you. Alex McCoy is a believer in that mindset. As an undrafted free agent in the San Diego Padres’ minor-league system with the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps, the hulking outfielder began the season on an absolute heater, putting together a .354/.386/.683 slash line with 10 doubles, a triple, five homers, 14 RBIs and five stolen bases in April. He was named Midwest League Player of the Month and his profile jumped several rungs on the prospect ladder. McCoy currently sits at No. 14 on Padres Mission’s Top 20 list. But then came May. After getting hits in his first two games of the month, he went hitless in his next seven. “I'm a lot more mentally strong than I thought,” McCoy said. “There was one week this season, I was coming off Player of the Month, we played Beloit and I went 0-for-23 or something like that. I was putting the ball in play, they're catching it, pop flies and I was like, 'Man, I came off of the hottest month and then 0-for-23 at this point. What is going on?' Going into the next week, I was just like, 'You know, the game's hard and no one can hit .350 for three months straight or whatever the case is.' We play a game where you fail 70% of the time. If you hit .300, you're amazing. So kind of put that in the back of my head. I'm still in a good spot and what I've done is great, but also how can I kind of come back and overcome going 0-for-23. Went into that next week, kind of just forgot about it, you know, goldfish mindset. I tell myself all the time, get out, strikeout, just forget about it in the next AB. That's been my mindset these last few months.” That approach has certainly worked for a right-handed hitter who has some of the best pure power in all of the minors. Entering play this week, the 24-year-old has put up a .264/.342/.465 slash line with 12 homers and is tied for the Midwest League lead with 23 doubles. He also leads the TinCaps with 44 RBIs. Since that scorching-hot April, he has had month-long slash lines of .226/.336/.473 (May), .235/.330/.341 (June) and .233/.298/.279 (July so far). Some of that has to do with the expected ups and downs of a baseball season, some has to do with teams getting better scouting reports on McCoy. After signing in 2024, he played in 58 games in 2025 and slashed .315/.393/.521 with seven homers, 40 RBIs and 14 stolen bases mostly at Low-A Lake Elsinore, which was the extent of the knowledge most other teams had on him entering 2026. He saw some of that in a recent series against the Great Lakes Loons, a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate. The TinCaps were facing left-hander Zach Root, drafted with the 40th pick last year. “He's probably the best I've seen all year,” McCoy said. “I'm facing him and he's out there grunting, throwing his stuff, kind of showing some attitude on the mound. I kind of take it as a good thing. I feel like him being a good pitcher and me being a good hitter, it's always good when you're out there competing. ... That obviously helps me elevate my game.” Another piece of his toolbox that has helped McCoy experience success has been his hitting ability. While an imposing figure at 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, he isn’t just in the batter’s box to mash. He wants to be an all-around hitter. “I think if I go up to the plate and tell myself, 'OK, I'm gonna hit a home run here,' I may get my A swing off, but if I can get my bat to the ball, be more consistent that way ... put the ball play, hit it hard somewhere, I think that's the better approach overall. No one hits a home run on purpose, I feel. With that mindset in the box, you just kind of get too big and try to do too much myself. Just play pepper, hit the gaps, I'm down to hit a home run or double or even a single, just get base and contribute.” Of course, McCoy is well-known for his exit velocity. This year, he stung a ball at 119.5 mph — on a groundout. That surpasses the best thus far in MLB, which is 119 mph double by Pittsburgh Pirates star Oneil Cruz. The best by a Padres major-leaguer is 119.6 mph by Manny Machado on a homer in 2021. While every player just wants a shot with an organization, McCoy found the Padres to be a good fit. He wasn’t surprised to go undrafted following his senior season at Hofstra in which he slashed .306/.384/.509 with 11 homers and 44 RBIs in 56 games. That was his only season at the university, where McCoy was coached by longtime MLB infielder Frank Menechino, after spending his first three collegiate seasons at Maryland-Eastern Shore. McCoy had a pre-draft workout in New York state, which went well from all perspectives. “I always told myself and I told my agent before the draft that I want to go where I'm wanted,” McCoy said. “I just think my performance at the workout and Johnny McNamara, my area scout, me and him stayed in contact throughout the season and at the workout, he came up with a nickname for me, Big Mac ... just had a good time at the workout and kind of just felt at home. When the draft came around, they told my agent early on that they'll sign me once the last round is called.” Now, McCoy is taking advantage of his opportunity, even if there is a little bit of a chip on his shoulder from not being selected. “Being drafted is cool, but I think at the end of the day, whether you're a first-rounder, 10th-rounder, 20 rounder, free agent, you all go to the same place when it's all said and done,” McCoy said. “And once you're in that place, those rounds don't matter, you're all competing against each other, obviously, but you also make lifelong friends and stuff. While he didn't fit with the San Diego Padres anymore, Ron Marinaccio has found a new home. The Padres on Thursday traded the right-handed reliever to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for international signing bonus money. According to MLB insider Francys Romero, the Padres received $500,000. Marinaccio was designated for assignment by the Padres on Sunday. He was the odd man out in the bullpen and was out of options when left-hander Wandy Peralta came back off the bereavement list. The 31-year-old, dealt from the Chicago White Sox in January 2025 after he was DFA'd for cash, had a 5.32 FIP (4.79 ERA) in 33 appearances with an 8.9% walk rate and 18.7% strikeout rate this season. The San Diego Padres reeled in their biggest fish from the MLB Draft. Does that help them catch another big fish? First-round draft choice Coleman Borthwick, a high school pitcher out of Florida, has signed with the Padres on Wednesday, according to his Instagram account. On Friday, Jonathan Mayo of MLB Pipeline reported the bonus to be $3.8 million, with the 21st overall pick had an assigned value of $4,224,700, saving more than $400,000 for other picks. The Padres also came to terms with sixth-rounder Nu'u Contrades, a shortstop from Arizona State, who received a $300,000 signing bonus, MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis reported Thursday. Contrades had a slot value of $350,100. Borthwick, at 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, was the top high school pitcher selected in the draft and signed his contract at the Padres' complex in Peoria, Ariz. Depending on if Borthwick received an under-slot deal, the Padres could use that money toward one of his teammates at South Walton High School in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. That would be right-handed pitcher Denton Lord, whom the Friars selected in the 17th round after he announced on Instagram following the fifth round that he would honor his commitment to Mississippi State. But if the Padres can cobble enough money together from other draft picks, they could land Lord. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas fell to Las Vegas 5-1, the Double-A San Antonio Missions lost to Frisco 7-5, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps dropped a 9-1 decision to Lake County and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm were pummeled 13-1 by Visalia. That would be the TinCaps' only run. TinCaps right-handed starter Winyer Chourio had his third straight subpar outing since being promoted from Low-A Lake Elsinore. The San Diego Padres have landed their fifth-round draft choice. Kansas State right-handed starter James Guyette has signed with the Padres for $400,000, MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis reported Wednesday. That is just slightly below the slot value of $449,500. You can keep tabs on the Padres and their draft pool with our Draft Tracker. A 6-foot-3, 215-pounder, Guyette was a surprise selection for the Friars with the 157th pick. He was not ranked by either Baseball America or MLB Pipeline. A SoCal native who attended Newbury Park High School, Guyette joined the Kansas State rotation this season as a junior and had a 5.56 ERA with 35 walks and 105 strikeouts in 79⅓ innings. He has a really nice slider in the mid-80s and a good sinking fastball that sits 93-94 mph. He also has a changeup that can become a plus pitch. If indeed the San Diego Padres do decide to trade away players, their bullpen is an obvious place with several pieces that would help other contenders. Among those players is left-hander Wandy Peralta. According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, Peralta is "actively being discussed." The 35-year-old is making $4.45 million this year and has a player option for the same figure next year, making him very affordable for any team looking for a lefty in the bullpen. Peralta is having a very good season, with a career-best 2.35 ERA in 43 games, with his FIP at 4.18. He has a 9.7% walk rate and 15.5% strikeout rate. He isn't really an option to be a consistent late-game option, but can fill a flexible role. Peralta would probably bring back a solid prospect or could enhance a package for some of the more attractive Padres relievers in left-hander Adrian Morejon, right-hander Jason Adam (currently on the 15-day injured list) or even All-Star closer Mason Miller. TinCaps right-handed starter Kannon Kemp allowed three runs in 2⅓ innings, giving up three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Right-hander Maikel Miralles gave up the other three one one-plus innings thanks to three hits and five walks. He didn't retire any of the four batters he faced in the fifth inning. But that set the stage for the comeback. Down 6-0 after the top of the fifth, the TinCaps scored in the sixth on Kavares Tears' run-scoring groundout and in the seventh on Costello's solo homer, his 11th of the season. Evans walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth, Kasen Wells bunted him to second and, after a flyout, Wideman singled off the glove of the first baseman and Evans, after hesitating rounding third, scampered home ahead of the throw. Following a pitching change, McCoy walked it off by driving a single past a diving shortstop and into left-center, with Wideman racing home to set off a celebration following the TinCaps' sixth walk-off of the year. Tovar, George Bilecki and Qrey Lott each had a pair of hits with Lott and Dawson Willis each scoring twice for the Storm. Willis and Lott each stole three bases and Conner Westenburg two. Storm right-handed starter Jesus Castro struck out five and allowed just one hit in four innings, but did walk five. Right-hander Yoesmerli Beltre picked up his first Low-A victory with 2⅓ perfect innings. Visalia scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to grab a 6-1 lead. The Storm comeback began with a five-run seventh inning. Bilecki singled, Lott singled him to third with one out and stole second, Willis had an RBI single with Lott going to third, Willis stole second and Tovar had a two-run single to make it 6-4. Following a wild pitch and a pitching change, Jorge Quintana walked, then a two-out wild pitch put runners on second and third. Colton Vincent walked with Tovar scoring on a wild pitch, prompting another pitching change. Another wild pitch brought in Quintana with the tying run. In the eighth, Westenburg had a leadoff single and stole second with one out, Willis walked and had a double steal to put runners on second and third. Tovar then grounded one back up the middle to bring in both go-ahead runs.
