It was a rough Thursday for the top four San Diego Padres affiliates, which all lost. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas were blanked by Sugar Land 11-0, the Double-A San Antonio Missions fell to Arkansas 12-7, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps didn't score in an 8-0 loss to Lake County and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm came up short vs. Fresno 8-7. Padres Minor-League Transactions San Diego Padres sent 1B Nick Solak outright to El Paso Chihuahuas. 1B Nick Solak elected free agency. San Diego Padres sent 2B Jake Cronenworth on a rehab assignment to El Paso Chihuahuas. Matt Waldron Walks Four In Rehab Outing As Chihuahuas Lose Padres right-hander Matt Waldron made his third rehab start, turning in a rocky 2⅔ innings, and the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas gave up nine runs late in an 11-2 setback to the Sugar Lane Space Cowboys. Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth was scheduled to make his first rehab appearance following a concussion, but the paperwork was finished in time to allow him to play, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Croenworth will be in Friday's game. Sugar Land had a rehabber of its own in Houston Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr., who struck out four and allowed two hits in three shutout innings. Waldron walked four and allowed two hits and two runs while striking out four. Right-hander Misael Tamarez followed Waldron with a career-best 3⅓ shutout innings. Marcos Castanon and Nick Schnell each had two of the Chihuahuas' seven hits. Carlos Rodriguez had a single and a walk to keep his on-base streak alive at 33. Kai Roberts went 4-for-5, Ryan Jackson had two hits and three RBIs and Chris Sargent Jr. had a homered, had a pair of hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Missions. Tirso Ornelas also had two hits, while Kai Murphy homered and scored three times. Missions right-handed starter Ian Koenig was lit up for seven runs (six runs), including a pair of homers, in two innings on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout. Arkansas scored three in the first and four in the second before the Missions got a pair back in the top of the third on a Ryan Jackson double, then the Travelers got two more in the bottom of the third. Three Captains pitchers combined to limit the TinCaps to two hits. Kavares Tears had a leadoff single in the third inning and Justin DeCriscio a two-out single in the sixth for the TinCaps' only hits. TinCaps right-handed starter Carson Montgomery gave up five runs in just 1⅔ innings on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Storm right-hander Lan-Hong Su, a 19-year-old international signing in October from Taiwan, gave up four runs in 2⅔ innings in his Lake Elsinore debut. He allowed four hits, while walking one and striking out two. Fresno scored once in the top of the first, but the Storm came back in the bottom half on a Dylan Grego one-out double, Jose Verdugo was hit by a pitch with two outs and Ocopio brought them both home with a double. The Grizzlies tied it in the top of the second, scored twice in the third, two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth and seventh for an 8-2 lead. But the Storm made a furious comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Yimy Tovar singled, Dawson Willis walked and Grego hit a grounder to short that was booted, allowing Tovar to score. Qrey Lott struck out, but reached on a wild pitch with Willis scoring and Grego going to third. Verdugo followed with a two-run double to make it 8-6, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball to pull within 8-7. Tuesday saw the San Diego Padres' top four affiliates go 2-2 as the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas were bounced by Sugar Land 7-1, the Double-A San Antonio Missions fell to Arkansas 8-5, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps edged Lake County 7-6 and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm prevailed 4-2. Sean Boyle's Emergency Start Foiled As Chihuahuas Stumble Late Despite a strong start from right-hander Sean Boyle, the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas succumbed to a late surge by the host Sugar Land Space Cowboys 7-1. Carlos Rodriguez went 3-for-4 for the Chihuahuas to extend his on-base streak to 32 games, while Nick Pratto had a pair of hits and Marcos Castanon drove in the only run on a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. The 29-year-old Boyle was making his first start since May 8, yet went five innings, allowing just one run on four hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Boyle was starting in place of left-hander JP Sears, who was called up by the Padres. But the bullpen let the Chihuahuas down as right-hander Miguel Cienfuegos gave up two runs (one earned) in 1⅓ innings and right-hander Ethan Routzahn was roughed up for four runs in 1⅔ innings on five hits and a walk. Castanon's sac fly made it 1-1, then the Space Cowboys scored twice in the sixth and four more in the eighth to put this one away. Missions left-handed starter Jagger Haynes, Padres Mission's No. 11 prospect, struck out seven while matching his season high of 6⅔ innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks. Right-hander Clay Edmondson got the final out of the seventh in his Double-A debut. After Arkansas grabbed a 3-0 first-inning lead, the Missions came back with two runs in the third as Carson Tucker hit a sac fly and Jackson an RBI groundout, then two more in the fifth on Jackson's run-scoring double and Cunningham's first Double-A RBI on a single to put the Missions up 4-3. The Travelers tied it in the bottom of the seventh, but then jumped on left-hander Harry Gustin for four runs in the eighth on two hits and two walks. Right-hander Tucker Musgrove, like Cunningham and Edmondson up from High-A Fort Wayne, made his Double-A debut with a walk and a strikeout in the three batters he faced to end the eighth. Tears finished a triple shy of the cycle. The Captains scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth and had runners on the corners when the final out was recorded. Right-hander Winyer Chourio picked up where he left off at Low-A Lake Elsinore in his TinCaps debut. Chourio allowed just one run on five hits but did walk three while punching out four over five innings. He did give up a homer. Ryan Wideman, another player just up from Lake Elsinore and Padres Mission's No. 5 prospect, singled and stole three bases, extending his minors-leading total to 46. Cantwell, who had two hits, hit a solo homer in the second inning after hitting just two at Lake Elsinore. He also doubled in a three-run fifth inning that put the TinCaps up 5-1. Tears' ninth homer of the season came one out after Cantwell went deep. The Storm, leading 5-2, tacked on what would prove to be two important runs in the top of the ninth as Wideman singled home Tears, with a wild pitch bringing in the second run. A leadoff error by Cantwell, the first baseman, opened the door for the Captains in the bottom of the ninth. Right-hander Will Koger, in his High-A debut, walked three straight after the error to bring in a run before he was replaced by left-hander C.J. Widger, who got a strikeout, issued a bases-loaded walk and two-run single before getting a strikeout to end the game for his second save. Storm right-handed starter Carlos Medina went three innings, giving up a run on three hits with no walks and four punchouts. Right-hander Isaiah Lowe, back with the Storm after a rough first half with High-A Fort Wayne, pitched two perfect innings. Right-hander Jordan Valenzuela, also made his return to the Storm after starting the season in the Arizona Complex League, walked two and struck out two in a scoreless sixth inning. He pitched in 10 games for the Storm last year. Right-hander Brandon Langley struck out two and allowed three hits in two innings, while right-hander Sean Barnett picked up his first professional save despite allowing a run on a hit and a walk while getting a strikeout. After Fresno jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, the Storm came back with two in the bottom half as Yimy Tovar had a sacrifice fly that was dropped by the left fielder, allowing Ocopio, who had doubled and stolen third, to score and putting Tovar at first. Conner Westenburg reached on a forceout that erased Tovar, then stole second and third, giving him 29 on the year. Willis doubled to bring in Westenburg. Willis hit his second homer with the Storm in the fifth inning, a solo shot, to go up 3-1 and Tovar had an RBI single in the sixth for a 4-1 lead. Chihuahuas Walk 13 In Loss As German Marquez Appears In Relief In a stat line straight out of Nuke LaLoosh lore, the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas walked 13, a season high, and struck out 15, also a season high, in dropping a 12-5 decision to the host Sugar Land Space Cowboys to open the second half of the Pacific Coast League schedule. Padres right-handed starter German Marquez made a brief relief appearance in his fifth rehab game as he comes back from right forearm irritation. Marquez came on with one out and one on in the second inning and the Chihuahuas up 1-0. He allowed the inherited runner to score and gave up another in 1⅔ innings, giving up three hits while walking two and striking out three. The run he gave up came on a homer in the third inning. Marcos Castanon hit a three-run homer, drove in four and had two hits, as did Carlos Rodriguez and Pablo Reyes. While Marquez got the loss, the damage done by the Space Cowboys came off right-hander Michael Flynn, who was tagged for five third-inning runs on four hits and two walks while getting just one out, putting Sugar Land up 7-1. Castanon hit his three-run blast, his 11th homer of the year, in a four-run fifth inning, but the Space Cowboys pulled two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth to go up 9-5. Albert Fabian also homered as part of a two-hit, two-RBI night, while Ryan Jackson also had a pair of hits and drove in two and Kai Roberts had two hits and scored twice. Ornelas hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot in the third, giving him 10 homers. Fabian's blast was his fifth this year. Yost retired the first nine Travelers of the game before giving up a leadoff homer in the fourth inning and then gave up a one-out double in the sixth. But those would be the only hits against the Missions. Right-hander Sadrac Franco struck out five of the six hitters he faced in his two innings and right-hander Johan Moreno was perfect in the ninth, striking out one. For Yost, it was the second straight start in which he went six innings and allowed two hits. Watson gave up the only hit during his six-inning start, a homer leading off the fourth inning by Jace LaViolette, and two of his four walks came in the second inning, leading to another run. Watson did strike out three in earning his first professional win in five decisions since debuting this season. Varmette followed with a perfect seventh and Salazar finished the final two innings, walking one and striking out four for the 18th one-hitter in TinCaps history. The TinCaps were down 2-1 entering the top of the sixth, when they batted around and scored four times. After Rosman Verdugo singled home Alex McCoy to tie the game, Tears singled to center, bringing in newcomer Kerrington Cross and Verdugo for a 4-2 lead. Two outs later, Ryan Wideman, another promotion, singled Tears to third and Justin DeCriscio drove home Tears to make it 5-2. Storm shortstop Jorge Quintana booted a grounder by the second batter of the game, contributing to the three unearned runs. The Storm didn't get going until the sixth inning, when Bilecki hit his fourth homer of the season to make it 6-1. The late start to the season for Lucas Giolito has been interrupted. The San Diego Padres on Tuesday placed the right-handed starter on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right elbow. Left-hander JP Sears was called up from Triple-A El Paso. Giolito, the last of MLB's top free agents to sign, signed a one-year, $3 million contract April 22, nearly a month after Opening Day, and spent another three-plus weeks getting his arm in game shape in the minors. But he has been inconsistent in his seven games, which included the last two with an opener to try and give him a path to success. But Giolito has produced a 6.07 FIP (5.16 ERA), with career worsts of a 16.7% walk rate and 13% strikeout rate. His last start came in Sunday's series finale against the Texas Rangers, a 4-3 loss, in which Giolito lasted just four innings, giving up all four runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Sears, the other piece the Padres got from the A's in the Mason Miller deal at last year's trade deadline, has been in the minors all season. The biggest impact was felt at High-A Fort Wayne, where the TinCaps have eight new players, and Low-A Lake Elsinore, with six players joining the Storm. Let's check in on the San Diego Padres prospects who made a mark in the last week (check out Padres Mission's latest Top 20 rankings as well!): Clay Edmondson, RHP, High-A Fort Wayne Season stats: 2-3, 1.67, 23 games (all relief), 11 saves (13 chances), 27 IP, 13 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 13 BB, 38 K, .134 opponent average You don't expect a relief pitcher to retire every batter they face, although that would be nice. But the sidewinding right-handed closer for the TinCaps had as good of a week as you can. The 14th-round draft choice last year out of North Carolina-Asheville retired nine of 10 hitters in three appearances. The one blemish was a two-out walk in Tuesday's game against the South Bend Cubs. But that was also the game in which he struck out three. Edmondson is second in the minors with 11 saves, even though only one of last week's three games resulted in a save. In his two outings before last week, Edmondson had one rocky game and another where he took the loss in a walk-off. The latter one came as he was in his second inning and issued two of his three walks in the game. That was the second game in which he allowed multiple walks and they came on back-to-back outings. The first of those was his worst outing of the season. Edmondson got just two outs, the second time this year he didn't get at least three, on June 5 vs. Lake County, giving up two homers and three runs. Romeo Sanabria, 1B, Double-A San Antonio Season stats: .247/.345/.394, 66 games, 34 R, 13 2B, 0 3B, 8 HR, 32 RBIs, 36 BB, 72 K, 5 SB, 2 CS After a rough April in which the left-handed-hitting first baseman had a .176/.290/.282 slash line, Sanabria has bounced back with two very nice months (.283/.400/.413 in May, .284/.338/.500 in June). The 18th-round draft pick in 2022 earned a promotion to Triple-A El Paso with that progress and will debut at that level Tuesday. This was his second year at Double-A after slashing .257/.309/.376 with 12 homers and 56 RBIs in 119 games there last season. Sanabria isn't your prototypical first baseman. Power is a lesser part of his game, whereas contact is more prevalent. After his walk rate dipped down to 7.6% last year, it is back up to 12.4% this year. His strikeout rate is up a few points from 21.4% to 24.7%. His power is also slightly improved, with his ISO at .147 this year after being at .119 in 2025. Sanabria had a career-best 12 homers last year after 11 in 2024. He has eight at the halfway point of this season, so he's on pace to eclipse that number, especially as he moves to the offensive-minded Pacific Coast League. Winyer Chourio, RHP, Low-A Lake Elsinore Season stats: 2-1, 3.31 12 games (11 starts) 51⅔ IP, 38 H, 19 R, 19 ER, 25 BB, 74 K, .204 opponent average In his final start before heading to Fort Wayne, the right-handed starter turned in what feels like a typical outing: six innings, one run, four hits, two walks, five strikeouts. It came in a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Giants that clinched the California League's South Division first-half championship. With the help of a first-inning double play, Chourio faced the minimum until a two-out single in the eighth. While he has a few big strikeout games (one at 10 K's, two at nine), Chourio hasn't necessarily dominated. He has walked 13 in his last five starts, including a one-walk game. He does limit contact, with his season opponent batting average at .204. Chourio has gone six innings in each of his last two starts, which matches his career high from an outing in 2023 in the Dominican Summer League. Kerrington Cross, 3B, Low-A Lake Elsinore Season stats: .313/.467/.608, 58 games, 49 R, 15 2B, 2 3B, 11 HR, 43 RBI, 46 BB, 53 K, 17 SB, 2 CS An on-base machine, the third baseman went 8-for-16 with three walks, a pair of homers and five RBIs. He also had three steals. That type of production against San Jose also earned him a promotion to Fort Wayne. Most of that came in the final three games of the six-game series, where he went 6-for-12 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs. Cross has a nice combination of getting on base and power. He has walked 46 times in 58 games and drilled 11 homers. His walks and homers are tied for third in the Cal League, while his .313 batting average is ninth and 49 runs is 10th. Cross has a 20.2% walk rate and 23.2% strikeout rate. He is also a stolen base threat, swiping 17 with the Storm. Dylan Grego, SS, Triple-A El Paso Season stats: .201/.283/.306, 44 games, 17 R, 8 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 16 BB, 41 K, 2 SB, 1 CS Grego might wake up each morning wondering what city he is in. After all, in addition to regular minor-league travel, he is on his third minor-league level this season. The shortstop started the season at High-A Fort Wayne, then got knocked down to Low-A Lake Elsinore before jumping all the way up to Triple-A El Paso due to players being promoted to the majors. The 13th-round draft choice last year out of Ball State only played in three of the six games against Corpus Christi in his first full week at Triple-A, but he made the most of his opportunity. He went 8-for-12 with three doubles and a homer with three multi-hit games after having three previously all season. His season got off to a rough start, going 0-for-19 in his first six games before finally getting a hit, leading to a dismal .109/.180/.218 slash line in April. His June has been much better as he has notched hits in seven of nine games for a .375/.417/.500 mark. Honorable Mention: Carlos Rodriguez, OF, Triple-A El Paso Before closing things out, I just wanted to give a nod to Rodriguez, who was included in last week's Hot Sheet, for his hitting streak, which reached 21 games before coming to an end. That didn't slow him down, though. After taking an 0-for-4 Thursday against the Reno Aces, Rodriguez came back with a 3-for-4 game, then an additional hit in the final two games of that series to give him hits in 25 of his last 26 games. With the first half of the minor-league season officially in the books, it is promotion time. After news of right-handed reliever Tucker Musgrove, Padres Mission's No. 14 prospect, going up from High-A Fort Wayne to Double-A San Antonio broke Sunday, a few more moves became known Monday, with more on the way before the start of new series Tuesday. That begins with center fielder Ryan Wideman, the minors' stolen base leader. Padres Mission's No. 5 prospect, Wideman is going from Low-A Lake Elsinore to High-A Fort Wayne. Also, right-handed reliever Andrew Moore and first baseman Romeo Sanabria are going from Double-A San Antonio to Triple-A El Paso. Wideman, perhaps the most dynamic hitter in the system, is slashing .314/.389/.504 with six homers and 44 RBIs to go along with a minors-best 43 steals (13 times caught stealing) over 65 games. Moore is having a breakthrough season as a 26-year-old. He has a 1.85 ERA in 20 games and 24⅓ innings with 24 walks and 45 strikeouts. Sanabria was a candidate to start this year at El Paso, but was on San Antonio's Opening Day roster for the second season in a row. He has a .247/.345/.394 with eight homers and 36 RBIs in 66 games. When a pitcher is on like St. Louis Cardinals right-handed starter Dustin May was in the series opener, there isn't much you can do. The former Los Angeles Dodger took a perfect game into the seventh inning, settling for a one-hitter in his first complete game as the Padres fell 3-0. Fernando Tatis Jr. drew a leadoff walk in the seventh inning to ruin the perfect game and Manny Machado grounded a single to left field two batters later to foil the no-hitter. But the Cardinals' defense came through to keep the shutout intact as shortstop Masyn Winn, last year's NL Gold Glove winner, ranged up the middle to snag Gavin Sheets' grounder, raced to get the force-out at second base and fired to first to get the inning-ending double play. May needed 101 pitches to complete his nine-strikeout performance. Before this outing, May had never recorded an out in the eighth inning as a starting pitcher. Meanwhile, the Padres employed an opener in an effort to get right-hander Lucas Giolito going. The opener worked as left-hander Wandy Peralta struck out one in a perfect first inning. Giolito, who hadn't gone more than four innings in his three previous starts, went five innings, but it still wasn't sharp. He allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out a pair. He put up zeroes in his first two innings before the Cardinals got to him for two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. Left-hander Kyle Hart, called up before the game as closer Mason Miller was put on the bereavement-family medical emergency list, covered the final two, allowing just a hit. The Padres were without manager Craig Stammen, who was suspended for one game along with right-handed reliever Ron Marinaccio (three games) for hitting Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson in Saturday's game. Marinaccio is appealing his suspension, allowing him to remain on the active roster. Managers can't appeal. Game 2: The good news is that the Padres had four times as many hits as they did the day before. The bad news is that means they only had four hits. After a series in Baltimore in which things seemed to be turning around, two games in St. Louis have sent the Friars back to where they were. The latest entry in that book was a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals. Right-hander Michael King, the de facto leader of the rotation due to injuries to Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove, trudged through 4⅓ innings, giving up three runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout. In seven of his 15 starts, he has walked three or more. This short start came after three consecutive six-inning outings, yet he has allowed at least three runs in his last five games. King gave up a pair of runs in the second inning and another in the bottom of the fifth after the Padres had pulled within 2-1 in the top of the fifth. He also threw 93 pitches and couldn't get a second out in the fifth. But the pitching struggles are magnified by the woeful offense. This time, the Friars made right-handed starter Andre Pallante look like a Cy Young Award contender. Pallante struck out six over seven innings, giving up a pair of runs on four hits and no walks. Pallante had a perfect game two outs into the fifth, a day after May took a perfecto into the seventh. Samad Taylor finally broke through with an infield single, giving him an eight-game hitting streak, tied for the longest on the team this year (Miguel Andujar, Luis Campusano). Taylor stole second and scored on a Ty France single. The other two hits came an inning later when Tatis singled with two outs and Jackson Merrill doubled. But 10 of the final 11 Padres were retired, with Machado drawing a two-out walk in the ninth. Game 3: The perfect game bid by the Cardinals' starter lasted only until the second batter. Taylor, moved to the No. 2 spot in the lineup, walked, then Merrill singled him to third and Machado had a sacrifice fly. That helped change the script from the first two innings and the Padres were able to hold those vibes, pulling away late for a 6-1 triumph to avoid being swept. The bullpen deserves a ton of credit in this one. Right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez was the opener and pitched a scoreless first, allowing a single. After right-hander Griffin Canning, a bullpen that was down Marinaccio, whose suspension was reduced to two games and began serving the penalty with this game, finished things off with Hart going 1⅔ innings, right-hander Jason Adam taking the eighth and left-hander Adrian Morejon closing it out in a non-save situation. Canning was better after giving up seven runs in five innings his last time out. He only went 4⅓ innings, though, allowing one run on four hits as he walked three and fanned a pair while throwing 77 pitches. The early run stood until the fourth, when the Padres added another on a Machado double and a Xander Bogaerts one-out single. It became 3-0 in the fifth when Will Wagner singled, went to second on a wild pitch and came home on Tatis' line-drive double that was misplayed by the center fielder, who had the ball sail over his head. The Cardinals got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a walk and two singles off Canning. But that would be the extent of the damage the Cardinals would do. The offense provided the knockout blow in the ninth. Sung-Mun Song singled past the second baseman and went to third on Tatis' one-out single that saw him thrown out at second trying for a double. Taylor rekindled the fire and extended his hitting streak to nine with a single and a steal of second. Merrill allowed Taylor to trot home when he hit a high drive just inside the right-field foul pole for his eighth homer of the season. Rangers series Game 1: In a game in which 11 runs were scored in the first inning, the difference came down to the starting pitchers. The Padres tagged two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom with five runs in the top of the first, only to see the Texas Rangers retaliate with six runs against right-hander Randy Vasquez. But the pedigree of deGrom allowed him to adjust and settle in to last six innings, while Vasquez couldn't make it through the fourth in the Padres' 9-7 loss. Despite being staked to that 5-0 advantage, Vasquez's undoing can be traced to the very first batter he faced. Joc Pederson hit a grounder to first baseman France, who flipped to Vasquez, who dropped the ball. Two of the three walks he would issue on the day followed in the next four batters and it was downhill from there. Vasquez finished by getting just 10 outs, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks with only one strikeout. It was the third time in five starts Vasquez has given up a season-worst eight hits and only the second time in 15 starts he didn't register multiple strikeouts. The positive portion of the day was that the Padres jumped on deGrom. Slow starts have been a trademark of this year's Friars, but not this day. Tatis (walk) and Taylor (single) reached before deGrom punched out the next two hitters. Sheets kept things going on a sharp single to right to bring in Tatis. Sheets even stole a base (his fourth this year) before Bogaerts walked on a full count to load the bases. France then launched a 98.3 four-seamer for an opposite-field grand slam, the first yielded by deGrom in his illustrious career for a 5-0 lead. After the Rangers' counterpunch in the bottom of the first, the Friars tied it in the fourth when France jumped on the third consecutive slider he saw from deGrom and smashed his second homer of the game, this one to center. It was France's second multi-homer game and eighth long ball of the year for five RBIs, matching his career best. The Rangers chased Vasquez in the bottom of the inning with another run, tacked on another in the sixth and the teams traded runs in the eighth, with the Padres getting a solo shot from Sheets. France would double in the sixth inning, making him the first player to ever have three extra-base hits off deGrom in a single game. Taylor also had three hits and Sheets a pair, accounting for eight of the team's 10 hits. Catcher Rodolfo Duran was removed from the game after taking a foul off his right knee. He finished the seventh inning, but Blake Hunt made his MLB debut in the bottom of the eighth. Born in Costa Mesa, Hunt was in his ninth year in the minors when called up the previous weekend. He had been called up in 2024 by the Baltimore Orioles, but did not appear in a game. In another quirk, weather delayed two of the four umpires from being on the field for the start of the game. The other two appeared for the bottom of the first. Game 2: And now we have our Manny moment. Just over two weeks following Tatis' walk-off homer, Machado bashed a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning as part of a five-RBI game that stood up for the Padres 6-4 victory over the Rangers. Machado's issue has been the opposite of Tatis this year: He has the power production, but not the consistent hitting. Machado has been at or near the bottom of qualified hitters in batting average, but his homer, his second hit of the day, lifted his number to .178 this season. It was also his 13th homer of the year, putting him one ahead of Sheets for the team lead. This win, a nice bounce back following the series-opening setback, rekindled some of the late-inning magic that was present in April. Down 3-1 in the eight, Machado had an RBI groundout and Merrill a run-scoring single to tie it. Otherwise, the offense had been held down by former Padres left-hander MacKenzie Gore, who gave up a run on five hits and two walks with six punchouts in an emergency start. Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi was scratched with left knee soreness, with Gore moving up a day. Eovaldi was rescheduled to go Sunday. Padres right-hander Walker Buehler is on a bit of a roll. While not particularly sharp in previous outings, Buehler, working with Hunt as he made his first MLB start, allowed just one run in his fourth straight start in his 5⅓ innings, matching his season high with seven strikeouts, while allowing five hits and a walk. The lone run came on his last batter as Wyatt Langford had an RBI double. He was replaced by Hart, who escaped further damage. But it was Adam who glitched, giving up a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on Jake Burger's 13th homer of the season for a 3-1 lead. Morejon continued to be stellar, punching out five, tying his career high, in two shutout innings and Miller, who returned Friday from the bereavement-family medical emergency league list, took over in the 10th, allowing the zombie runner to score on Langford's two-out single before notching his second strikeout to seal his NL-leading 20th save in as many chances. The offense produced nine hits a day after having 10, showing signs of getting back to something normal. Merrill had three hits and Tatis two. Game 3: On a day where pitching was in control, the Rangers were a bit better than the Padres. You can understand that when it was, essentially, a matchup between Giolito and Eovaldi. Giolito came on after Peralta once again served as an opener, but Giolito only managed to go four innings while Eovaldi went six. Both gave up all the runs in a 4-3 Padres loss, finishing the nine-game road trip 4-5. The big blow came on a three-run homer from Langford in the third inning. The young center fielder jumped on a first-pitch changeup and launched it for his sixth homer of the season and a 3-0 lead. The Padres retaliated with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Merrill got his 11th hit of the road trip when he had a leadoff double and Machado continued to heat up with a line single to left to move him to third. Sheets came through again with an RBI single to make it 3-1. One out later, with Sheets now on second, Bogaerts grounded a single to center to score Machado and Sheets, who had taken a step back toward second, was sent home and thrown out. That short-circuited a bigger rally as France singled and Song doubled home Bogaerts to tie it 3-3. The Rangers came right back, however, as Giolito gave up three straight one-out singles to Nicky Lopez, Langford and Josh Jung for the go-ahead run. Eovaldi did give up seven hits while punching out nine. The Friars had another nine hits, the fifth time on this nine-game roadie with at least that many. The offense surfacing comes at a good time as the competition this week stiffens. One of the San Diego Padres' most coveted arms has earned a promotion. Right-handed reliever Tucker Musgrove, Padres Mission's No. 14 prospect, has been promoted to Double-A San Antonio, according to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel. At Low-A Fort Wayne this season, the 6-foot-1 24-year-old has appeared in 19 games and posted a 3.79 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 13 walks in 19 innings. Musgrove pitched in his final game for the TinCaps on Sunday, retiring all four batters he faced, including two strikeouts. Musgrove has tantalizing stuff, reaching triple-digits with his four-seam fastball and sinker just a few ticks below that. He also mixes in a sweeper and a slider. Just as the San Diego Padres' offense appears to be picking up steam, they get back one of their key bats. Designated hitter Miguel Andujar was activated off the 10-day injured list Sunday by the Padres, with outfielder Nick Solak designated for assignment. Andujar missed the minimum time while dealing with a minor strain of his left hamstring. Andujar, a key right-handed bat, was slashing .254/.288/.418 with five homers and 17 RBIs when he went on the IL. His 12 doubles are just one off the team lead, shared by Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill and Gavin Sheets, despite playing 20 fewer games than two of those players. Wolf scattered eight hits over five innings, giving up two runs, including a homer, and a walk with three strikeouts and benefited from a defense that turned three double plays on the night. Right-hander Logan Gillaspie gave up two runs on four hits in his lone inning, while right-hander Ty Adcock allowed a run on two hits in the seventh and right-hander Misael Tamarez two runs in two innings. After Reno scored in the top of the first, the Chihuahuas tied it in the bottom half as Bruce Johnson reached on an error by the third baseman, stole second and scored on Carlos Rodriguez's one-out ground-rule double. But that would be the extent of the offense for the Chihuahuas, who managed just three more singles the rest of the way. TinCaps right-hander Abraham Parra matched his career high with six innings, allowing a pair of runs on five hits and two walks while punching out four. Both runs came in his final frame. He reached six innings for the sixth time, having done so four times last year with Low-A Lake Elsinore and once in 2023 in the Dominican Summer League. Schmitt, coming off an 11-strikeout performance last week vs. Ontario, went five innings and struck out just two, while yielding three runs on five hits and a walk.
