Padres Video
Week 2 of the Arizona Fall League is in the books, with San Diego Padres prospects playing for the Peoria Javelinas in the showcase event. Each week, we will take a look back at how the Padres' prospects fared. One of the Javelinas' games this week was rained out.
For last week's recap, check here.
Ty Harvey, C
After an opening week highlighted by five stolen bases, the catcher has yet to find his rhythm at the plate. Padres Mission's No. 5 prospect went 2-for-11 this week with a pair of RBIs and a stolen base in the three games he played in. Two of those games were at the designated hitter spot, the other behind the plate.
Justin DeCriscio, SS
DeCriscio continued to show versatility by playing three spots in three games: second base, shortstop and third base. He went just 1-for-10 at the plate, but did have an impact Thursday vs. Scottsdale. DeCriscio had a leadoff six-pitch walk in the third inning, then stole a pair of bases and scored on Harvey's infield single to third. He then had a bases-loaded RBI single in the fourth.
Alex McCoy, OF
Padres Mission's No. 8 prospect made jaws drop with a homer in Thursday's game against Scottsdale. Leading off the top of the fourth inning, McCoy crushed an 89.3 mph first-pitch sinker middle in from right-hander Marcus Johnson (Tampa Bay Rays, Double-A) out to deep left. The 436-foot shot had an amazing exit velocity of 118.2 mph. For comparison, only two balls had a better exit velocity in all of MLB this season: 119 mph by Oneil Cruz of the Pittsburgh Pirates and 118.5 mph by Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros. It was the second homer of the AFL for McCoy, who hit 19 between High-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio this year. That was part of a 3-for-12 week for McCoy, who also had an opposite-field double with a bit of an awkward slide.
Winyer Chourio, RHP
The right-hander had a tough go in his second AFL start. On Wednesday vs. Surprise, Padres Mission's No. 17 prospect lasted 2⅔ innings, giving up two runs on a hit, but he walked six and had three wild pitches while striking out two.
Igor Gil, LHP
The left-hander made one relief appearance, going 1⅔ shutout innings on Thursday against Scottsdale, allowing just one hit, while walking two and striking out three.
Kannon Kemp, RHP
The 22-year-old had a tremendous start Saturday against Scottsdale. After being limited to 12 games during the regular season, Kemp pitched four hitless innings, allowing just two over the minimum. He walked a pair and struck out five. The eighth-round draft choice in 2023 has struck out 11 in 8⅔ frames over his three starts in the AFL.
Francis Pena, RHP
The right-hander had two nice relief appearances last week. In the first one, Tuesday vs. Scottsdale, Pena mowed down the Scorpions, needing just seven pitches (five strikes) to retire all three hitters he faced while picking up the win. Jett Williams (Milwaukee Brewers, No. 8 prospect by Baseball America) lined out to right on the fourth pitch, Dakota Jordan (San Francisco Giants, No. 9) grounded out to second on the first pitch and Nehomar Ochoa Jr. (Houston Astros, unranked) grounded to short on the second pitch.
Pena came back Saturday also against Scottsdale. He went two innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit and a walk while fanning three. Pena, coming off a nice regular season at Double-A San Antonio, hasn't allowed an earned run in five innings in the AFL, striking out four and walking two.
Jordan Valenzuela, RHP
Valenzuela also pitched Tuesday against Scottsdale. He allowed a run on one hit and a hit batter in the five hitters he faced. It was his third appearance in the AFL. The 21-year-old is in his first full season in the U.S. and made 21 appearances at Low-A Lake Elsinore during the regular season.
