Tied season records are now broken by cold statistical analysis instead of by a game between the tied teams. 

Teams have tied 16 times in the regular season forcing 12 one game playoffs and 4 series playoffs. Before 1969, teams resolved ties with a 3-game series in the National League and a 1 game playoff in the American League.  The 1 game playoff became standard for both leagues in 1969 and continued until 2022, to be replaced by comparison of head-to-head records, intradivision, intraleague and additional statistical tiebreakers.

The Padres have tied once in 2007 and lost a 13 inning 9-8 game to Colorado in Coors Field. Now Game 163's will no longer be.

This year, the Padres are fighting for the top wild card spot, which gives the opportunity for home field advantage during the initial wild card round.

Should tie breaker games be brought back or is statistical analysis the way to determine who advances or gets the higher seed?
