Padres Minor League Report: Strong Pitching Not Enough As Chihuahuas Drop Season Finale

Ian Koenig Finishes Strong As Chihuahuas Drop Finale

Another season of San Diego Padres minor-league baseball has come to a close. This one concluded with the host Triple-A Chihuahuas dropping a 2-1 decision to the Oklahoma City Comets. The Chihuahuas went 2-4 in the series and finished with a 60-90 record, including 25-50 and last place in the second half of the Texas League's East Division.

Chihuahuas right-hander Ian Koenig, in his second start of the week, finished strong, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. He posted a 2.33 ERA in five Chihuahuas starts after a 5.40 ERA in 21 for the Double-A San Antonio Missions. That resulted in a 4.19 ERA for the season. Koenig finished with 120 strikeouts, two behind right-hander Winyer Chourio for the system lead.

Right-hander Sean Boyle followed Koenig and went the final four innings, allowing a run on four hits and a walk while punching out five. He did give up the go-ahead RBI triple to Alek Thomas with one out in the top of the eighth inning. It was a line drive to center that Carlos Rodriguez made a diving effort for but came up short and rolled to the wall.

The Chihuahuas had only four hits in their finale, singles by Rodriguez, Gage Workman, Marcos Castanon and Anthony Vilar. The only Chihuahuas run came in the second. Trailing 1-0, Castanon singled to right and went to second on a groundout. Vilar then hit a liner to right-center that easily scored Castanon from second.
