Right-handed reliever Roel Ramirez signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Thursday and was assigned to Triple-A El Paso. The 31-year-old has had two appearances in MLB, once in 2020 and another in 2021, both with the St. Louis Cardinals. Most recently, he was pitching for the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican Baseball League. This past season, Ramirez had a 1.76 ERA and a 0.891 WHIP with nine walks and 63 strikeouts in 46 innings over 47 games. He also pitched in the World Baseball Classic for Mexico, appearing in two games for 2⅓ innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out three. Born in Laredo, Texas, Ramirez was drafted in the eighth round by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2013. In 10 minor-league seasons, he posted a 4.28 ERA. He was last in affiliated ball in 2023 with Atlanta.
