Steve Drumwright Padres Mission Editor Posted 56 minutes ago Posted 56 minutes ago Add one prospect to the San Diego Padres' 40-man roster. Left-handed starter Luis Gutierrez had his contract selected in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Gutierrez, 23, pitched just 36 innings this season after injuring his left shoulder following three starts to begin the season with the Double-A San Antonio Missions. He came back to make five rehab appearances in the Arizona Complex League and with the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps before three more starts with San Antonio and finishing the season with the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas. In all, he made 13 starts and had a 4.50 ERA, with an 11.6% walk rate and 28.4% strikeout rate. While he might have been considered a risky proposition if selected in the Rule 5 draft, the Padres felt they had the room on the 40-man to protect their future with Gutierrez. View full rumor
