Katie Woo of The Athletic is reporting that the Padres are interested in acquiring the Cardinals' JoJo Romero. The Padres continue to inquire on the relief market despite already leading baseball with a 2.99 bullpen ERA and sending three relievers to the All-Star Game. General manager A.J. Preller has signaled interest in adding a second high-leverage left-hander to lessen the workload on Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada, both of whom rank among the league leaders in appearances. St. Louis southpaw JoJo Romero fits that description and remains under club control through the 2027 season. Across 34 innings in 2025, Romero owns a 2.12 ERA with a 2.88 FIP, 9.0 K/9, 4.0 BB/9, and just 0.3 HR/9. He has converted 52.9 percent of batted balls into grounders and stranded 76.4 percent of his baserunners. Statcast reports opponents have managed a .267 wOBA (.270 xwOBA) against him, with an average exit velocity of 89.1 mph and a 38.9 percent hard-hit rate. Because Romero is left-handed and can be optioned, the Padres could deploy him flexibly while maintaining roster depth. His combination of swing-and-miss capability (34 strikeouts) and home-run suppression falls in line with San Diego’s preference for power arms who limit damage late in games. With Emmanuel Clase now unavailable and Ryan Helsley’s market escalating, Romero represents a controllable alternative whose cost in prospect capital may align with Preller’s stated goal of “adding to a strength” without altering the club’s long-term pitching plans. Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome of The Athletic are reporting the Astros are pursuing a trade for Padres starter Dylan Cease. Sources briefed on Houston’s discussions say Dylan Cease tops the club’s trade deadline wish list, and the Padres right-hander fits the power-arm profile owner Jim Crane has targeted in past July moves. Cease, 29, has logged 118 1⁄3 innings over 22 starts with a 4.79 ERA and 153 strikeouts, good for 11.64 K/9. Under the hood, his 3.53 FIP, 3.64 xFIP, and 97.1 mph average fastball velocity sit near the league’s leaders, and a .320 wOBA against versus a .304 xwOBA points to run-prevention upside. Astros scouts watched Cease on July 23 in Miami, where he yielded two earned runs in five innings and punched out five; the outing kept his expected ERA at 3.53. Cease is earning $13.75 million in his walk year and will reach free agency this winter. Houston has a major-league-high 17 players on the injured list, among them starters Cristian Javier, Luis Garcia, and Lance McCullers Jr., plus sluggers Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Peña, and Isaac Paredes. Healthy arms Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez need reinforcement, and Cease would form a high-strikeout trio. Acquiring the remaining salary would push Houston over the competitive-balance tax; Crane crossed that threshold for Justin Verlander in 2023, so cost alone may not deter him. Houston is also surveying the market for a bat, with Willi Castro, Jesús Sánchez, and Jake McCarthy mentioned as possibilities. View full rumor

Padres Still Interested in Guardians Outfielder Steven Kwan
Brock Beauchamp posted a rumor in Rumors
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic recently wrote that the Padres are interested in trading for Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan, 27, who is earning $4.175 million in 2025 and will remain arbitration-eligible through 2027. In 99 games, he is hitting .285/.350/.411 with a .333 wOBA and 115 wRC+. FanGraphs has him at 2.8 fWAR, a top-20 mark among outfielders this season. Statcast lists Kwan at +3 Outs Above Average while he has logged 772 ⅓ innings, almost all in left field. The Padres have not found a consistent solution in left field since Jurickson Profar departed; FanGraphs’ preseason ZiPS write-up flagged the position as “likely to be a problem again” in 2025, and that has undoubtedly been the case. Adding Kwan would give San Diego an outfielder under control for two additional seasons, avoiding the rental profile common at the deadline. Because his 2025 salary is modest, his projected arbitration raises are unlikely to strain the club’s precarious financial position. With Kwan under control through 2027, any deal would address a present-day lineup need while providing payroll stability. The Guardians are reportedly seeking a robust package; Kwan’s 2.8 fWAR and two additional seasons of control elevate the asking price beyond typical corner-outfield rentals. -

Jackson Wolf fanned eight over six dominant frames, and Forrest Wall’s two-run double keyed El Paso’s 5–1 win. Francisco Acuña’s 10th-inning homer highlighted San Antonio’s late charge before the Missions fell, despite Jagger Haynes’ five strong innings. Brandon Butterworth collected two singles as Fort Wayne was blanked, while Sean Barnett swiped his first High-A bag. Nate Mondou reached four times, and Tim Locastro pilfered two bags. Cobb Hightower drove home two early, yet Lake Elsinore couldn’t overcome a late rally despite Zach Evans’ ninth-inning double in defeat. Padres Transactions No Roster Moves Wolf fans eight, Wall’s two-run double propels Chihuahuas past Space Cowboys Box Score Jackson Wolf carved through the Sugar Land lineup, striking out eight over six innings as El Paso secured a 5–1 victory at Southwest University Park. The lone run against the left-hander was unearned, and he limited damage to five hits and two walks before turning a two-run edge over to the bullpen. The Chihuahuas broke through in the third. Rodolfo Durán coaxed a leadoff walk, and Clay Dungan lashed a double into right to move him to third. Brandon Lockridge lifted a sacrifice fly that plated Durán, and, with two outs, Nate Mondou dragged a perfect bunt single to score Dungan for a 2–0 lead. Wolf’s night carried into the seventh, when El Paso’s bats supplied breathing room. Dungan bounced a one-out single, Lockridge was hit by a pitch, and Forrest Wall ripped his 15th double off the left-field line to bring both runners home. Yonathan Perlaza followed with an infield single that chased in Wall, capping the scoring. Mondou finished 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, reaching in all four trips. Wall went 2-for-4, drove in two, doubled, and swiped his 21st base, while Dungan scored twice on a two-hit night. Lockridge and Perlaza each added an RBI, and Tim Locastro drew two walks before stealing his 17th and 18th bags. Bryan Hoeing bridged the seventh and eighth with two shutout frames, and Francis Pena needed just 11 pitches for a spotless ninth, sealing Wolf’s fourth Triple-A win. Acuña’s two-run blast sparks late rally, but Missions drop extra-inning thriller Box Score The Missions staged a furious comeback in the 10th, but an eight-run effort from Midland proved too much in an 8–6 defeat Saturday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium. Starter Jagger Haynes set the tone early, striking out six across five innings while allowing two runs. Right-hander Stephen Jones followed with 1 1/3 scoreless frames, and Tyson Neighbors stranded a runner in a scoreless seventh. San Antonio’s bats awakened in the sixth. Anthony Vilar worked a leadoff walk, advanced on a groundout, and dashed home on a wild pitch to put the Missions on the board. After Romeo Sanabria singled and stole second, Albert Fabian rifled a game-tying RBI single to right. Devin Ortiz immediately added another knock to score Fabian, capping a three-run inning. The extra innings turned turbulent. Ethan Routzahn (0-2) was tagged for five runs—four earned—in the top half of the 10th. Down 8–3, the Missions refused to fold. Placed runner Kai Murphy scooted to third on a wild pitch, and Marcos Castañon ripped his 20th double to left to drive him in. Midland recorded two quick outs, yet Francisco Acuña launched his eighth homer deep to left-center, a two-run shot that sliced the deficit to two. The rally stalled there, but the late surge showcased the lineup’s resilience. Ortiz reached base three times, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Acuña’s lone hit produced two runs, while Vilar went 1-for-3 with a double and scored twice. Butterworth’s two hits not enough as TinCaps fall in Cedar Rapids Box Score The TinCaps mustered six singles but could not unlock the scoreboard in Saturday’s 7–0 loss at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Brandon Butterworth continued his steady stretch at the plate, going 2-for-4 with liners to left in the fourth and eighth innings. Ryan Jackson matched him with a pair of knocks, while Sean Barnett singled to open the fifth, promptly swiped second for his first High-A steal, and later walked. Kai Roberts also reached on a free pass, yet Fort Wayne finished 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight. Eric Yost skirted trouble in a scoreless first despite his own pickoff throw sailing wide of first. The right-hander was charged with three runs in 3 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits but issuing three walks and striking out three. Nick Wissman needed only five pitches to end the fourth, and Will Varmette followed with 3 1/3 frames, surrendering two earned runs while fanning five. Josh Mallitz recorded the final out of the eighth. Fort Wayne’s defense kept the scoring down in the sixth when first baseman Brendan Durfee squeezed a pop-up in foul territory and, after Andy Lugo broke for third, fired to shortstop Leo De Vries to complete a slick double play. Cedar Rapids tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth and added two insurance tallies in the eighth, spoiling Butterworth’s multi-hit night and a solid seven-reach performance by the TinCaps’ top third of the order. Hightower’s two-run single gives Storm early spark, but late offense fades Box Score Lake Elsinore jumped in front at Banner Island Ballpark, but the lead didn’t last. In the second, Kale Fountain punched a ground-ball single, Ryan Wilson coaxed a walk, and Chase Valentine followed with another free pass to load the bases. Cobb Hightower then shot a single into center, plating Fountain and Wilson for a 2–0 lead. Right-hander Bryan Balzer retired the side in order in the first, yet a pair of wild pitches and a run-scoring groundout allowed the home club to pull even in the second. An on-field delay and a two-run double in the third ended Balzer’s night, and the Storm never regained momentum. Fountain reached in the sixth on a throwing error and scampered all the way to third on the play. Kasen Wells’ RBI groundout trimmed the deficit to 7–3. The Storm threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases on a Tears walk, a Wells walk, and Wilson’s second pass of the night, but a strikeout and a flyout ended the inning. Zach Evans provided a late highlight by scorching a two-out double to the gap in the ninth, his second hit, but it was the final baserunner of the evening. View full article

The Storm threatened again in the eighth, loading the bases on a Tears walk, a Wells walk, and Wilson’s second pass of the night, but a strikeout and a flyout ended the inning. Zach Evans provided a late highlight by scorching a two-out double to the gap in the ninth, his second hit, but it was the final baserunner of the evening.-

Cody Roberts homered, drove in two, and scored twice as Triple-A El Paso clipped Sugar Land, 5-2. Devin Ortiz reached three times, but Double-A San Antonio fell, 5-0. Braedon Karpathios’ two-run single and four double plays weren’t enough in High-A Fort Wayne’s 5-4 walk-off loss. At Single-A, Lamar King Jr. collected three hits, a steal, and two runs while Bernard Jose and Vic Domingo combined for 12 strikeouts to secure Lake Elsinore’s 6-4 road victory. Padres Transactions Signed RHP Jaxon Dalena Signed 3B Kerrington Cross Signed RHP Will Koger Signed LHP Jamie Hitt Roberts’ bat, fleet feet spark Chihuahuas past Sugar Land Box Score Cody Roberts supplied the thunder and the go-ahead spark as El Paso beat Sugar Land 5-2 at Southwest University Park. The catcher opened the home third by driving a ball over the left-center wall for his second homer of the year, knotting the game at 1-1. Two innings later, Roberts lined a run-scoring single to right, capping a two-run frame highlighted by Nate Mondou’s two-RBI single that pushed the Chihuahuas in front for good. Roberts finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Mondou’s single was his only hit, but the second baseman walked once and plated the decisive runs. Brandon Lockridge doubled, singled, and swiped his sixth base, while fleet Mason McCoy reached three times, stole two bags, and scored. Yonathan Perlaza lofted an RBI double, and Forrest Wall singled, walked, and collected his 20th steal. Matt Waldron (6-2) steadied the club with five innings of four-hit, two-run work, striking out four. Left-hander Omar Cruz followed with two scoreless frames, fanning four more, and righty Raúl Brito punched out two over the final two innings for his first Triple-A save. El Paso’s offense finished 4-for-15 with runners in scoring position and stole five bases without being caught, giving the Chihuahuas enough cushion to claim their 52nd victory of the season. Ortiz’s two-hit night can’t spark Missions' offense in 5-0 loss Box Score San Antonio managed just four singles and one late double, dropping a 5-0 game Wednesday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium. First baseman Devin Ortiz set the tone at the plate, reaching three times on two singles and a second-inning walk. The Virginia product owns a .256 average and .653 OPS after his 2-for-3 effort. The Missions’ best chance came in the fifth. Ripken Reyes lined a single to left, Addison Kopack worked a walk, and Wyatt Hoffman followed with a sharp single to load the bases with one out. Shortstop Francisco Acuna then bounced into a double play, ending the rally. Kopack supplied San Antonio’s lone extra-base hit, ripping a leadoff double to the left-field corner in the eighth. Hoffman, Reye, and Kai Murphy also collected knocks, but the club finished 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded six. On the mound, right-hander Jared Kollar struck out five over three innings but was tagged with two third-inning runs and took the loss. José Geraldo yielded three runs across two frames before the bullpen steadied. Stephen Jones scattered two hits while punching out three in 2 scoreless innings, and Tyson Neighbors followed with two shutout frames of his own, fanning three. San Antonio pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts against just four walks, yet the early deficit proved too much for the quiet offense to overcome. Karpathios’ two-run knock, four TinCaps double plays go for naught in ninth-inning setback Box Score Fort Wayne built an early lead behind timely swings and crisp defense, but a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth flipped a 4-3 lead into a 5-4 loss Wednesday afternoon. Braedon Karpathios put the TinCaps on top in the third, ripping a two-out, two-run single for a 2-0 advantage. An inning later, Ryan Jackson’s first High-A triple chased home Oswaldo Linares, and the visitors led 3-0. Center fielder Kai Roberts sparked the offense all day. He reached base three times—single, walk, and hit-by-pitch—swiped his 17th and 18th bags, and scored twice. In the seventh, he stole second and third before Leo De Vries lined a run-scoring single that pushed the margin to 4-2. De Vries finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Jackson, Karpathios, and Brandon Butterworth added one hit apiece. Fort Wayne’s staff was stingy early. Clark Candiotti spun a scoreless first, and Sam Whiting followed with three no-hit innings. Fernando Sanchez bridged the middle frames with three scoreless, two-strikeout innings. The TinCaps turned four double plays—two started by Jackson at short—to back the bullpen. Holding a one-run edge in the ninth, Nick Wissman (0-1) surrendered a leadoff double and a walk before the decisive two-run single dropped into right. The right-hander was charged with three runs over 1 1/3 innings. Despite the late heartbreak, the TinCaps finished with nine hits and limited the opposition to 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. King Jr. leads Storm offense, power bullpen seals 6-4 win Box Score Lake Elsinore erupted for three runs in the opening frame, riding Lamar King Jr.’s big night and a strikeout-heavy bullpen to a 6–4 victory at Banner Island Ballpark on Wednesday. The first baseman jump-started the rally with a line-drive single before scoring on Kavares Tears’ RBI knock. Kale Fountain added a run-scoring single, and another run crossed on a misplay to stake the Storm to an early 3–0 edge. After the hosts briefly pulled in front, Lake Elsinore answered in the fourth when Cobb Hightower’s groundout plated Alex McCoy, and Zach Evans poked a two-out RBI single to reclaim the lead. King Jr. provided an insurance run in the seventh, sprinting home on Carlos Rodriguez’s sharp single. King Jr. finished 3-for-5, reached base four times, and swiped his 16th bag of the season. Evans collected two hits, a run, and an RBI, while Tears drove in his 53rd run and walked once. Fountain reached twice, and Kasen Wells singled, walked, and stole his 24th and 25th bases. Left-hander Kash Mayfield allowed only one earned run over 2 1/3 innings before Bernard Jose (1-2) fanned six in 2 2/3 frames to notch the win. Vicarte Domingo punched out six more over three spotless innings, and Adam Conrad worked the ninth for his second save. Storm pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts against six hits, issuing just three walks to secure the club’s 42nd victory.

At Double-A, Francisco Acuna swiped two bags and scored both runs while four relievers preserved San Antonio’s shutout. Leo De Vries’ go-ahead blast and three-reach game paced Fort Wayne despite a seven-run setback. Padres Transactions No Roster Moves Lockridge’s late blast backs Wolf as Chihuahuas tame Rainiers Box Score Yonathan Perlaza jump-started El Paso’s offense in the fourth, turning on a Sauryn Lao slider and lining his 12th homer over the right-field wall. The Chihuahuas added more an inning later: Mason McCoy reached on an infield single, dashed home when Cody Roberts’ fielder’s choice grounder skipped past second, and Brandon Lockridge delivered a sacrifice fly for a 3–0 cushion. Lockridge struck the decisive blow in the seventh. After Forrest Wall’s two-out single, the center-fielder launched a towering two-run shot to left—his second Triple-A homer and third RBI of the afternoon—to push El Paso to a four-run margin. Lockridge finished 2-for-4 with a steal and scored twice; Tim Locastro added three singles and his 12th stolen base, while Nate Mondou and Clay Dungan also swiped bags. Left-hander Jackson Wolf (3-1) was dominant, scattering four hits and one run across five innings. He fanned nine, issued one walk, and even picked off Samad Taylor at first. Acuna’s wheels, bullpen combine for Missions’ four-hit shutout Box Score SAN ANTONIO — Francisco Acuna ignited the offense and four San Antonio arms slammed the door in a 2-0 victory Sunday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium. The shortstop set the tone in the first inning with a single, stole second, and scored on Romeo Sanabria’s line-drive knock. Acuna struck again in the seventh, ripping a double to left-center, swiping third for his 17th steal and cruising in on Brandon Valenzuela’s sacrifice fly. Acuna finished 2-for-4 with two steals and both San Antonio runs, while Sanabria turned in a three-hit night and notched his 41st RBI. Luis Campusano’s three-hit, two-RBI night and Yonathan Perlaza’s game-tying two-run homer powered Triple-A El Paso in a 9-7 slugfest. At Double-A, right-hander Victor Lizarraga fanned six while Francisco Acuna and Moisés Gómez logged the Missions’ only hits in a 5-0 defeat. High-A Fort Wayne walked it off when 19-year-old Leo De Vries ripped a tenth-inning RBI double after Eric Yost’s five sharp frames and Garrett Hawkins’ two perfect innings. Single-A Lake Elsinore cruised 7-0 as Carlos Rodriguez cleared the bases with a fourth-inning triple and Kannon Kemp anchored a six-hit shutout. Padres Transactions No Roster Moves Perlaza’s two-run blast knots it, but Chihuahuas slip late Box Score Luis Campusano jump-started El Paso’s offense in the first, lining an RBI single to center after Brandon Lockridge’s leadoff double. The catcher finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and pushed his RBI total to 50. Down 5-2 in the fourth, Rodolfo Durán punched a two-run single up the middle and later added a bases-loaded walk, giving him three driven in on the night. Yonathan Perlaza provided the loudest swing. After Campusano’s fifth-inning single, the right-fielder crushed his 11th homer into the Cheney Stadium batter’s eye, leveling the contest at 6-6. Perlaza went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, two RBI and a walk, reaching three times. Nate Mondou doubled, singled, walked and was hit by a pitch, touching first base four times, while Mike Brosseau collected three hits and an RBI. Right-hander Logan Gillaspie surrendered six runs over 3 2/3 innings, but a resilient bullpen kept the game close until the sixth, when two runs charged to Kyle Hart (2 1/3 IP, two earned) put Tacoma back in front. Jose Espada fired a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts, and Sean Reynolds limited damage to one run in the eighth. Trailing 9-6 in the ninth, El Paso loaded the bases on Perlaza’s double and two free passes; Durán coaxed another walk to force in a run before a called third strike ended the rally. Despite tallying 14 hits and five walks, the Chihuahuas left 11 men aboard in the 9-7 defeat. Missions bats go silent in shutout at Wolff Box Score San Antonio’s offense never found traction Saturday night, collecting only two singles and a pair of walks in a 5–0 loss at Nelson Wolff Stadium. Francisco Acuna chopped a single through the middle in the third inning and Moisés Gómez lined a base hit to right two frames later, but those brief sparks were quickly extinguished. The Missions finished 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded just three men on base. Right-hander Victor Lizarraga absorbed the defeat despite allowing only two earned runs. The 21-year-old scattered four hits over 4 innings, striking out six against one walk. Two unearned tallies followed a pair of throwing errors by third baseman Devin Ortiz, stretching Amarillo’s lead to 4-0. San Antonio’s bullpen kept the game within reach. José Geraldo spun a clean fifth, Jared Kollar worked 2 1/3 innings and limited the damage to a single run, and Tyson Neighbors struck out three over 1 2/3 scoreless frames to close the night.
