  1. Only Mr. Preller and his staff know how much is still available for players' salaries. However, later in the winter, if Nestor Cortes can pass a physical, I'm guessing Preller will try to sign him. Before Cortes's arm fell off last season, he showed he could beat the Dodgers. That's worth some money.
  2. If Mr. Preller wants a FA 1B, the obvious choices to me are the tandem of Nathaniel Lowe (LH) and Goldschmidt (RH). If he wants to trade, Vientos, despite his poor 2025 season, would supplant Goldschmidt in the platoon, and would cost less and presumably, last longer than one year. The principle I hope Preller is using is that every addition he makes to the position player roster should be able to homer. All three of these guys can. Finally, if Miranda can stay on the field, he can hit.
  3. Your last paragraph was the key one. Mr. Preller obviously understands that every position player he adds must be able to at least occasionally hit homers because the people he is currently paying to hit them aren't. He now needs three more position players. If he sticks with free agents, he might try a tandem of Nathaniel Lowe and Paul Goldschmidt, and JJ Bleday as the fourth OF. By today's standards, they're reasonably priced.
  4. AJ Preller might be the most resourceful GM in MLB. But even after getting Michael King to come back today, he has more starters to hire and he's going to have to take some chances with his money. So, I hope he considers trying the Nick Pivetta notion again, this time with Walker Buehler. Pivetta obviously was helped by leaving Fenway. Maybe Buehler would be too.
  5. Financially, it makes sense to listen on Pivetta before the Padres have to start paying the fat end of his contract next season. Plus, the Mets' starters kept them out of the playoffs this year, so some of them will have to go to appease the team's disgruntled fans. Senga, Peterson, and Tyler Megill (if he can pass a physical) are available if Mr. Preller is interested. If he trades with the Mets, he should consider getting Mark Viento, who, along with the pitchers, bombed last year. But, even while bombing, he hit 17 homers, and, given a chance, he'll get better. The Padres could use 17 more homers.
  6. Prediction: No major league team currently has players they would be willing to trade that would get them Mason Miller.
  7. Mr. Preller's behavior suggests he's trying to finagle his way into a deal for a top of the heap starter. If he can do that with a farm system that's currently as bad as it was when he got here, good luck to him. Both Jose Berrios and Walker Buehler would be helped by getting away from East Coast bandboxes.
  8. If the Padres want to add a 3rd catcher, they should consider trading for JC Escarra of NYY.
  9. In filling out his roster of position players, Mr. Preller has to add players he can afford and who can at least occasionally homer. No more Iglesias and Arraez types. Nathaniel Lowe is an example of a FA hitter he could afford. Lowe, Sheets, and O'Hearn are essentially the same player, and Lowe is younger and cheaper than O'Hearn. Miguel Andujar and Willi Castro are two more examples of reasonably priced, versatile FAs who are professional hitters. For pitchers, Zach Littell and Walker Buehler will be affordable and useful. Preller could also participate in this winter's pitching fad: converting FA relievers into starters. If he does, Brad Keller might work. Also, Michael Soroka, Griffin Canning, and Nestor Cortez (if they can pass their physicals) are worth taking chances on, and Mr. Preller is going to have to take chances with his rotation hires.
  10. Mr. Preller and company probably hope Adcock is the 2026 version of Jeremiah Estrada.
  11. I just discovered 'Padres Mission' and I am gratified to see that we agree on Willi Castro as a high priority for the 2026 Padres.
