Padres Minor League Report: Joe Musgrove Looks Sharp In Likely Final Rehab Game

Thursday saw the San Diego Padres' four full-season affiliates go 1-3 and one of their Dominican Summer League teams lost the opener of the championship series. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas posted the only win, beating Oklahoma City 5-4, while the Double-A San Antonio Missions dropped a 7-2 decision to Springfield, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps losing 9-3 in 10 innings and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm falling 3-2. In Game 1 of the Dominican Summer League championship series, Padres Gold lost to the Reds 9-5.

Joe Musgrove Shines In Final Rehab Game; Chihuahuas Win

It looked like Joe Musgrove was motivated to return to the Padres. The right-handed starter was extremely efficient in what is expected to be his final rehab start, pitching five-plus innings, while Ethan Salas went 3-for-4 with a triple in the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas' 5-4 victory over the host Oklahoma City Comets. Marcos Castanon homered as part of a 3-for-4, two-RBI day, also scoring three runs, for the Chihuahuas.

Musgrove, coming back from Tommy John surgery and a spring training setback that will end up costing him five months of the regular season, threw all six of his pitches and consistently sat at 94 mph and reached 95 mph twice. He faced two batters in the sixth, yet only needed 60 pitches, 42 of which were strikes. As long as everything remains good, Musgrove is likely to return to the Padres' rotation either Wednesday in the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds or, more likely, back at Petco Park to open the New York Yankees series. This start was pushed back after he had a slight back injury while weightlifting last week.

After needing just eight pitches to complete the first inning, it took him just 10 to finish the second, 12 in the third, nine in the fourth and 15 in the fifth. He only threw six pitches to the two batters he faced in the sixth, giving up a single and RBI double to Alex Freeland. He finished allowing five hits and no walks while striking out three. His max velocity was down from the 96.8 mph he had in his previous start Aug. 14. He topped out at 95.5 mph on a fourth-inning sinker and hit 95 once with his four-seamer, while regularly being at 94 mph.

In the third inning, Castanon had an RBI double and Salas, Padres Mission's No. 1 prospect, brought in another on a chopper back to the mound that was booted by left-hander Cole Irvin to make it 3-0. Castanon then went deep to center, his team-leading 16th homer of the season, to put the Chihuahuas up 4-0. After the Comets scored off Musgrove in the sixth, Salas lined an opposite-field RBI triple to left-center to score Castanon.

The Chihuahuas hung on as the Comets got a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth against right-hander Hans Crouse, but right-hander Alek Jacob came on to retire two of the three hitters he faced for his team-high ninth save.

Slow Starts Costs Missions In Setback To Cardinals

Tirso Ornelas was on base three times and Romeo Sanabria had two hits, but the Double-A San Antonio Missions fell behind early in a 7-2 loss to the host Springfield Cardinals. The Missions struck out 18 times, including four each by Alex McCoy, Padres Mission's No. 8 prospect, and Braedon Karpathios, Padres Mission's No. 9 prospect.

Ornelas had a double among his two hits and also had a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Ornelas doubled with two outs and scored on Sanabria's single in the top of the first. Ornelas then singled home Anthony Vilar, who had a leadoff walk, with two outs.

Missions right-handed starter Victor Lizarraga gave up two runs in each of the first two innings en route to allowing five runs in 3⅓ innings on seven hits and two walks. He did strike out five.

TinCaps Rally, But Fall After Another Big Inning In Extras

Lamar King Jr. tied the game with an eighth-inning single, but the host High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps yielded another big inning in extra innings, falling to the Dayton Dragons 9-3 in 10. It was the third extra-innings loss in nine games so far on this homestand. One of those came Friday, when Great Lakes scored five runs in a 13-8 win in 10 innings.

Kerrington Cross had two hits, including a homer, and scored twice, while King (Padres Mission's No. 10 prospect) also had two hits and drove in a pair. King had an RBI double in the second to pull the TinCaps within 3-1, then Cross hit his 16th homer of the season, fifth with the TinCaps, in the sixth inning, a two-run shot that tied it 3-3. In the eighth, Luke Cantwell singled, went to second on a grounder, then scored on King's single to left.

A grand slam off right-hander Will Koger in the six-run 10th foiled what had been a good game by the bullpen. Left-hander Javier Chacon allowed one hit in three shutout innings, striking out four, while right-hander Jack Pineau, an undrafted free agent, went two hitless innings in his second pro game and first since being promoted Tuesday from Low-A Lake Elsinore.

Lan-Hong Su Fans 7, Joe Tiroly Hits Third HR, But Storm Fall

Seventh-round draft pick Joe Tiroly hit his third home run and right-handed starter Lan-Hong Su struck out a season-high seven over three shutout innings, but the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm gave up three late runs in a 3-2 loss to the host Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

Su allowed just two hits and a walk while surpassing his previous best total in his debut season of five, which he tied last week in a four-inning outing. This was by far the best of the 19-year-old's 10 games with the Storm and rivals his best in 16 games this year. Right-hander Albert Roblez, the Padres' 16th-round draft pick and former Valley View High School (Moreno Valley) athlete, went two scoreless with three strikeouts in his second pro appearance, while right-hander Jordan Valenzuela pitched a scoreless sixth inning. But left-hander Zack Qin gave up three runs (two earned) in 1⅔ innings.

Tiroly hit his second homer in four games and third in 11 pro games when he went deep to left field in the top of the fourth. Qrey Lott tripled and scored on Jose Verdugo's sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Padres Gold Drop Game 1 Of DSL Championship Series

Dayquer Alfonzo drove in four runs and Sebastian Nadales hit just his second homer of the season, but Padres Gold dropped the opener of the Dominican Summer League championship series 9-5. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is Friday. Alfonzo ranked ninth in the DSL regular season with 49 RBIs and had three more in five postseason games before his four in Game 1.
