Padres Minor League Report: TinCaps, Storm Rally Late For Victories

Tuesday saw the San Diego Padres' four full-season affiliates go 4-0 in their series openers. The Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas dropped Las Vegas 11-7, the Double-A San Antonio Missions beat Frisco 7-5, the High-A Fort Wayne TinCaps edged Lake County 7-6 and the Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm rallied for an 8-7 win over Visalia.

Nick Solak Homers, Drives In 4 As Chihuahuas Win Vegas Opener

Nick Solak homered, tripled and drove in four, while Blake Hunt also went deep as the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas upended the host Las Vegas Aviators 11-7 to begin a six-game series.

Dustin Harris went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Solak, Carlos Rodriguez and Bryce Johnson each had a pair of hits for the Chihuahuas. Hunt had two RBIs, while Rodriguez, Hunt and Johnson each scored twice. Johnson walked twice, reaching base four times in five plate appearances, and stole a pair of bases.

Padres right-handed reliever Jeremiah Estrada made his first rehab appearance for the Chihuahuas and second overall, walking two and allowing a hit in one-third of an inning.

The Aviators took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but that would be their only lead. Hunt and Johnson drove in runs and the go-ahead run scored on a passed ball in the top of the second. Las Vegas tied it in the fourth, then took the lead for good on Solak's two-run homer in the fifth, his 12th of the year. Hunt hit a solo shot, his fifth, in the sixth to go up 6-3, then Harris and Rodriguez added RBI singles for an 8-3 advantage. Johnson stole home as part of a double steal in the eighth, with Solak tripling in a pair to cap the Chihuahuas' scoring.

Francisco Acuna's Homer Helps Power Missions' Victory

Francisco Acuna hit a two-run homer, while Carson Tucker also drove in a pair as the host Double-A San Antonio Missions rode a four-run third inning to a 7-5 win over the Frisco RoughRiders.

Tucker, Ethan Salas (Padres Mission's No. 1 prospect), Braedon Karpathios (Padres Mission's No. 11 prospect) and Albert Fabian each had a pair of hits as the Missions outhit the RoughRiders 11-6.

Missions right-hander starter Eric Yost allowed two runs over four innings, striking out five, right-hander Josh Mallitz pitched two perfect innings and left-hander Harry Gustin earned his second save by escaping a bases-loaded no-out jam after entering with a 7-4 lead.

Trailing 1-0, the Missions took control in the fourth inning. Acuna had a leadoff walk and stole second, Tucker had a one-out run-scoring single to tie it, Salas' 13th double of the season plated Tucker for a 2-1 lead, Tirso Ornelas doubled home Salas and Karpathios singled him home with two outs. Tucker had another RBI single in the fifth to put the Missions up 5-2. The RoughRiders made it 5-2 in the top of the sixth, but Acuna hit his two-run blast, his fifth of the season, in the bottom half for a 7-3 cushion.

Alex McCoy's Walk-Off Caps Comeback From 6-0 For TinCaps

Alex McCoy singled home Ryan Wideman from second base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the host Fort Wayne TinCaps erased a 6-0 deficit by scoring five runs over the final two innings for a 7-6 victory over the Lake County Captains.

While McCoy, Padres Mission's No. 14 prospect who went 2-for-5, had the headlining hit, there were several contributors in the TinCaps' comeback. Wideman, Padres Mission's No. 4 prospect, not only scored the winning run, but tied the game with his RBI single to bring in Zach Evans. Wideman also had two hits, as did Jack Costello, who homered, drove in a pair and scored once. Five players had RBIs and seven players scored runs for the TinCaps.

TinCaps right-handed starter Kannon Kemp allowed three runs in 2⅓ innings, giving up three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Right-hander Maikel Miralles gave up the other three one one-plus innings thanks to three hits and five walks. He didn't retire any of the four batters he faced in the fifth inning.

But that set the stage for the comeback. Down 6-0 after the top of the fifth, the TinCaps scored in the sixth on Kavares Tears' run-scoring groundout and in the seventh on Costello's solo homer, his 11th of the season. With two outs and Tears on first, Rosman Verdugo tripled, Lamar King Jr. (Padres Mission's No. 11 prospect) walked, Verdugo scored on a wild pitch and King came home on Costello's RBI single to make it 6-5. Evans walked to lead off the bottom of the ninth, Kasen Wells bunted him to second and, after a flyout, Wideman singled off the glove of the first baseman and Evans, after hesitating rounding third, scampered home ahead of the throw. Following a pitching change, McCoy walked it off by driving a single past a diving shortstop and into left-center, with Wideman racing home to set off a celebration following the TinCaps' sixth walk-off of the year.

Yimy Tovar Spearheads Late 7-Run Burst As Storm Prevail

Yimy Tovar drove in four runs, including a two-run single that snapped a tie and capped a seven-run blitz over the seventh and eighth innings as the host Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm used nine stolen bases to topple the Visalia Rawhide 8-7.

Tovar, George Bilecki and Qrey Lott each had a pair of hits with Lott and Dawson Willis each scoring twice for the Storm. Willis and Lott each stole three bases and Conner Westenburg two.

Storm right-handed starter Jesus Castro struck out five and allowed just one hit in four innings, but did walk five. Right-hander Yoesmerli Beltre picked up his first Low-A victory with 2⅓ perfect innings.

Visalia scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to grab a 6-1 lead. The Storm comeback began with a five-run seventh inning. Bilecki singled, Lott singled him to third with one out and stole second, Willis had an RBI single with Lott going to third, Willis stole second and Tovar had a two-run single to make it 6-4. Following a wild pitch and a pitching change, Jorge Quintana walked, then a two-out wild pitch put runners on second and third. Colton Vincent walked with Tovar scoring on a wild pitch, prompting another pitching change. Another wild pitch brought in Quintana with the tying run. In the eighth, Westenburg had a leadoff single and stole second with one out, Willis walked and had a double steal to put runners on second and third. Tovar then grounded one back up the middle to bring in both go-ahead runs.
